Top producers

After three weeks, Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos leads all players in the first line category with eight goals, seven assists and eight penalty minutes for a total of 19 points in the hockey pool.

Corey Perry has been impressive accumulating points (three goals, five assists on the season) but his outbursts have also earned him a whopping 29 penalty minutes in only nine games — good enough to lead all players in the second line category with 22.5 total hockey pool points.

On defence, early standouts this season include Detroit defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom (eight points in seven games), Anaheim’s Lubomir Visnovski (six points, six penalty minutes in nine games), Pittsburgh’s Alex Goligoski (seven points, four penalty minutes in nine games) and Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman (six assists, 10 penalty minutes in eight games).

Despite tumultuous starts for their teams, goaltenders Martin Brodeur and Miikka Kiprusoff have provided the best fantasy value early in the season. Brodeur has eight starts with two shutouts while Kiprusoff has earned four wins, two by way of shutout, for the Calgary Flames.

Snake bitten

Both Henrik Sedin and Martin Havlat have yet to score a goal this season but are making up for it offensively. Sedin has 10 assists in eight games, while Havlat has six assists in seven games.

Wojtek Wolski, Patrice Bergeron and James van Riemsdyk have all gotten off to slow starts this season but appear to be putting the first weeks behind them. With all three beginning to come on in the past few games, the goals shouldn’t be far behind.

Youngsters Nikita Filatov and Taylor Hall are still looking for their first goals and it appears only time will if either is prepared for the length of a full season in the NHL. Filatov has yet to play more than 13 games with Columbus while Hall is playing in his first season as a professional.

Of all the players projected to have a strong year, Simon Gagne seems to be in the deepest of slumps. The former 40-goal scorer has yet to register a point in six games with the Lightning and currently sits at a team worst +/- of minus eight.
