Swan drops out of NDP leadership race
| 9/28/09
NDP leadership candidate Andrew Swan has decided to exit the race for premier of Manitoba, reported the Winnipeg Free Press.
Swan was the first candidate to enter the race. After a poor showing in The Pas delegate selection meeting Sunday, Swan decided he would not have enough support to win.
"I am personally disappointed," he told reporters at his campaign headquarters over the noon hour. "I simply wasn’t able to gather as many supporters as I would have liked."
At 41, Swan was the youngest of the three candidates. He is encouraging his supporters to back Greg Selinger.
His decision leaves Greg Selinger and Steve Ashton in competition for the Oct. 17th leadership vote. Currently Selinger is in the lead, according to a rough count of delegates.
Swan is expected to return to his cabinet position as the competitiveness, training and trade minister.
