Computer Programmer

There are a number of different computer science jobs a degree can get you, but the most popular is computer programming. Computer programmers generally work in creating, editing and testing software, as well as well as in maintaining current computer programs.

The type of work a computer programmer does will depend largely on what company or organization they choose to work for. Big companies like IBM often have programmers working on small sections of a larger project. Alternatively, in a small firm a programmer may be responsible for all aspects of a project, seeing it through from beginning to end. If a student is interested in eventually pursuing graduate studies in computer science, it may be beneficial to work in a research firm, which will provide both experience and contacts for further study.

The best way to find out if computer programming is right for you — and what kind of workplace suits your personality — is to participate in a co-op program. The University of Manitoba’s co-op program provides students with an opportunity to go out on work terms, generally 4 months, which can be an excellent indicator of your suitability for the job. Moreover, the interview and hiring process for these work terms provide students with contacts in the field, and also help to develop their interview skills.

Not every program provides students with an opportunity to ‘try on’ their intended career. Many students have to make do with second hand information and vague job descriptions. The best advice given by a computer programmer and recent graduate of the U of M is to participate in the co-op program. You won’t regret it.
