Sports volunteering
About Noreen
I am currently completing a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Studies online through Athabasca University. I began writing for the Manitoban as a volunteer and am also the Poetry Editor of the newly formed Journal of Integrated Studies. I am passionate about creative writing and have a love for all aspects of sport. I am also devoted to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Combine all of these elements and you have a Sports Editor dedicated to addressing the diverse aspects of sport and healthy living in a creative, informative way.
Why volunteer
There are many fabulous reasons to volunteer for the sports section. It looks good on your resume to have both published works and volunteer experience, it is an opportunity to write about something that you are passionate about, you will get to meet coaches and athletes, it is an excuse to attend sporting events, and you will grow as a writer. If you have story ideas already or if you just know you want to write, do not hesitate to contact me.
Types of stories
The most basic type of sports story is the game preview/report. The key here is to be factual — tell the reader what, where, why, and how, while remaining evocative — make the reader feel like they want to be at the game or that they were at the game.
The more creative type of sports story is the opinion piece. The unrivalled popularity of sports means that it has something important to tell us about the people we live with, and the world we live in. This “something” could have to do with sex, race, politics, history, religion, etc. In the end, it is for you to tell us, and for us to find out.Section meeting
The sports section meeting will take place Tuesdays at 2p.m.. Stop by to pitch story ideas, get assignments or just to say “hi!”
