Kelsey Wog cleans up at Canada West Swimming Championships

Kelsey Wog was the big story for the University of Manitoba coming out of the Canada West Swimming Championships.

Wog was named the woman swimmer of the meet after she collected six medals – three gold, two silver, and a bronze.

The breaststroke was Wog’s race, as she has now won the gold medal in the 50m and 100m breaststroke two years in a row. Wog won the 50m breaststroke with a time of 31.01 seconds, beating her next closest competitor by a second. Wog won the 100m breastroke with a time of 1:05.59, breaking the championship record and beating the closest competitor by nearly four seconds. Wog also collected the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:27.86.

Wog was part of Manitoba’s bronze medal-winning 4x100m relay team that finished with a time of 3:50.14. She was also apart of the relay team that collected silver in the 4x200m relay. On the final day of the meet, Wog won the 200m IM with a time 2:09.29, breaking yet another championship record.

Other Bisons at the meet included first year swimmer Dora Modrcin, who won bronze in the 50m backstroke with a time of 28.34 seconds and bronze in the 100m backstroke. Fourth-year Gio Wickett finished in seventh in the 50m backstroke. Anthony Illiouchetchev just missed out on the podium in the 50m backstroke, finishing fourth with a time of 22.89. Illiouchetchev placed fifth in the 100m backstroke with a time of 54.68.

Both the men’s and women’s team finished in seventh out of the eight teams at the Canada West championships.

 

The Bison swim teams will be back in the water Dec. 14-17 at the Pan Am Pool in Winnipeg for the Man/Sask Short Course Championships.
