Keeping spirits bright

7 ways to retain (some of) your sanity this term

Winter is long and classwork piles up fast. Keep your stress levels low and morale high while you patiently wait for the ground to thaw and sessions to end.

1. Sing in the car

Whether you can belt it like Mariah Carey in her prime or believe your voice is better left unheard, pop in your favourite song or blast the radio and sing. Singing releases endorphins and the neurotransmitter oxytocin and reduces cortisol levels, resulting in feelings of elation and less stress. I survive traffic jams and long road trips by aggressively singing ’80s power ballads with my trusty passenger.

2. Study with the right people

Find someone who has the same work ethic as you to study with, grab a coffee (or 12), and get to work. The key is to be able to focus on studying with them there but be able to goof off when it’s time for a break. The subject you are studying doesn’t matter, so long as you make progress. Do I know anything about thermodynamics? No, but my study buddy sure does.

3. Read for fun

My favourite professor once told me he is at his most creative when reading a book on the side that he enjoys. Sometimes you need to give yourself a break to better understand complex material. Set aside some time just before bed to read your book and wind down. Don’t worry about reading something from the literary canon – read something you enjoy.

4. Make time for something you love

By incorporating something you are passionate about into your day-to-day routine, you are adding a positive reinforcer, which will increase your level of happiness and satisfaction. Finished a full chapter for Abnormal Psychology today? Reward yourself with time to draw or watch your favourite movie.

5. Budget your time more carefully

Nothing is worse than worrying about a project due tomorrow that you have yet to touch. Save yourself the trouble by splitting the project, essay, or research paper into smaller sections and assigning yourself one section to complete each day. Create a checklist of each component and check it off once you’re done. Overwhelming tasks seem more manageable when pared down.

6. Make yourself an awesome breakfast

What is better than a great breakfast? Nothing. If you’re not inclined towards the culinary arts, check out a breakfast spot you have never been to before. Some of my favourites are: Edna Fedya, The Tallest Poppy, and Smith. If you’re feeling adventurous, try making yourself breakfast for dinner.

7. Genuinely give thanks

Taking the time to write a card is so much more meaningful than shooting off a quick text. Next time someone goes out of his or her way to do a favour for you, express your gratitude with a card. In addition to making them smile, it will boost your spirits. Expressing gratitude is incredibly important. Giving someone a genuine token of appreciation brings everything into perspective. The sun does not rise and set on your GPA; remember what is important.
