Active living programs at U of M

University isn’t just exercise for your mind

The University of Manitoba is not only a leading academic institute; it also places strong emphasis on fitness and recreation.

The faculty of kinesiology and recreation management operates the Active Living program, which offers programs under three branches: Bison sports, recreational services, and mini university.

The Bison sports facilities include Frank Kennedy Centre, Max Bell Centre, and Investor’s Group Athletic Centre. Combined they contain a swimming pool, indoor tracks, workout equipment, and an international ice hockey rink.

And don’t be fooled by the construction; the athletic facilities are still fully operational.

Recreational services offers year-round programs including adult swimming classes, kayaking, rock climbing, and group fitness classes.

Intramural sports, such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton are only $15 to participate, with the exception of ice hockey, which is $25. You have to sign up fast, though: registration fills up quick and games begin Sept. 29.

Mini university offers a total of 62 programs throughout the year to children ages 7-18. Participants benefit from the university’s nationally-renowned facilities under the leadership and direction of experienced, attentive staff.

Students pay $17/month for a yearly gym membership that includes access to facilities and equipment at both campus locations, free group fitness classes, and court booking privileges.

If you’re still uncertain if the active living program is right you, then take advantage of the free week trial offered to students from Sept. 8-12 and try out the recreational facilities and fitness classes free of charge!
