CD Review : Sara Lynn “Don’t Call Me Angel”

For those unfamiliar with her sound, Sara Lynn’s is one of eclectic tastes and styles all wrapped in emotional lyrics. Sometimes the Vancouver singer/songwriter is raspy to suit the mood, but the harmonies always fall into place with this Canadian chanteuse. And, most importantly, she is always interesting.

On Don’t Call Me Angel, Sara Lynn’s production techniques and writing capabilities bounce back and forth gracefully from rock to danceable, much like Nelly Furtado. Yet, the artist is also able to slip into warm soulful ballads a la Sarah McLachlan. The bounty of flavorful sounds doesn’t stop there, either. Listeners will also be tempted by Latin rhythms, or by the down and dirty folk of “A Love Like This,” which features some powerful guitar solo effects from Tim Hearsey. “Shadows Remix” is a great dance floor track that recalls the early days of Madonna’s reign and it shows just how much Sara Lynn is capable of diversifying her sound and her many talents.

Lynn’s initial success came from down south on American indie- and country-radio. But while for some her sound could be classified as Americana, it’s not really anything like what country music fans would expect. Canadians will get a chance to hear for themselves when Lynn tours across our great continent in early 2010 to showcase the many inspiring songs on Don’t Call me Angel, alongside newer material.

Not only does Sara Lynn have the knack for music — her self-promotion takes it even further. Indeed, her tracks are soon to be heard on Air Canada flights and cosmetic promotions with MAC on her website. Now that’s one smart cookie!
