Employment
The official University of Manitoba students’ newspaper seeks creative, passionate individuals to head all sections of the newspaper.
Experience with independent newspapers and familiarity with the Manitoban are assets, but training will be provided. Talent, enthusiasm and self-motivation are essential.
News editors (2)
Curious? The Manitoban seeks two news editors to coordinate and edit a six-page weekly section, focusing on the U of M campus but exploring all issues of relevance to students. A critical interest in U of M politics is a must, as is a commitment to balanced reporting.
Comment editor
Do you live to debate? A successful Manitoban comment editor will draw submissions from all perspectives, actively encourage volunteer contributions, and receive letters to the editor, in addition to commenting intelligently on issues of relevance to U of M students.
Features editor
Want to know more? The Manitoban’s features editor is tasked with writing and soliciting compelling and intelligent feature-length articles that provide deeper analysis of current events, social, economic, and political issues relevant both to students and the community at large. The features editor doesn’t report news, but makes it.
Culture editor
Got culture? The Manitoban’s culture editor is tasked with making fun of anything and everything while informing and educating readers — no short order. The ideal candidate is well-versed in both mainstream and highbrow culture, and can bring balance and focus to a unique section.
Arts editor
Hip to the scene? The Manitoban seeks an arts editor with the expertise to cover the local scene in all media: film, music, theatre, fine art, literature, television, and YouTube. A willingness to find unique artists and angles, master the U of M scene, and form productive relationships with media reps is essential.
Sports editor
Think CIS sports are the bomb? The Manitoban seeks a sports editor who can cover the Bisons with passion and a critical eye. A thorough grounding in popular sports is a must, as is the ability to go above and beyond the average game recap with coverage of recreation, nutrition, and sports science.
Copy editor
To Oxford comma or not to Oxford comma? The Manitoban is hiring a word nerd who specializes in spelling and grammar, and is willing to learn Canadian Press style. A knack for writing headlines and photo captions is a definite asset.
Design editor
Are you a master of InDesign? The Manitoban seeks a design editor to head the visual aspect of the paper. In addition to completing the layout each week, a successful design editor will lead the rest of the design team to ensure that no photo goes uncaptioned, no page goes without image. On occasion, staying late to meet Monday production deadlines is required.
Graphics editor
Do you want to get paid to draw? The Manitoban has a strong tradition of graphic art in the paper, and is seeking a graphics editor who will continue it. Making art to accompany specific articles is required, and a knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop is an asset, but training is provided.
Photo editor
Do you look at the world through a lens? The Manitoban is hiring a photo editor to take photo assignments for each section of the paper and turn them into visual gold. We seek a candidate with extensive experience with DSLR photography. Owning a camera is an asset, but equipment is provided. Photoshop training will be provided.
Production associate
The production associate assists the design editor with laying out pages in InDesign, as well as producing two illustrations per issue. The time commitment is approximately eight hours per week.
Technology editor
Do you speak code and English? The technology editor is charged with two main tasks: coordinating the Manitoban's online content — including leading a technological revolution at our newsprint-centric paper — and compiling a one- to two-page weekly Science and Technology section. If the two don't seem disingenuous, please apply.
Advertising coordinator
The Manitoban’s advertising coordinator must be a motivated, outgoing individual with above-average telephone and communication skills to maintain relationships with established advertising clients and pursue new local advertisers. The candidate should ideally have a marketing background. Duties include cold-calling, meeting with clients, organizing display and classified ad content for each issue and occasional clerical tasks. The position is full-time over the summer and part-time throughout the academic year.
All positions receive a biweekly honorarium, based on 20-30 hours of work per week (unless otherwise noted).
Applicants must have been registered at an accredited post-secondary institution within the last two years.
Employment will commence on May 19 and will end on April 15, 2009. There will be a limited time commitment during the summer, as the Manitoban publishes monthly beginning May 28. A regular weekly publishing schedule will commence on September 5.
THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS APRIL 30 AT 5 PM Every application should include:
CLIPPINGS: for writing editor jobs, three to five writing samples, journalistic, academic, or creative.
For design positions, please send a portfolio with a minimum of five and a maximum of 20 samples.
