Mike Howard, Football

Déjà vu? No, Mike Howard has been just that damn good the past two weeks. One week after capturing Mitchell Bowl MVP honours (and being named one of the Manitoban’s Best Bisons of the Week), the Bison football team’s 5’9” star defensive back was named the Vanier Cup’s Ted Morris Award winner, which is given to the game’s most outstanding defensive player. Howard had three highlight-reel interceptions, to go along with three tackles in the Bisons 28-14 win. |
Sabrina Barnes, Women’s volleyball
|
Barnes has been vital to the No.1-ranked Bisons’ hot start this year. The past weekend was no different, as Barnes helped the Bisons dispatch the visiting University of Calgary Dinos in a weekend sweep. In the first game of the weekend, Barnes had 11 kills and eight digs. In game No. 2, Barnes added another seven kills and nine digs. |
John Makie, football
|
Despite a 21-1 record as the Bisons starter, Makie is often left out of the discussion of top quarterbacks in the CIS. But with the whole nation watching him lead the Bisons to a win in the Vanier Cup, Makie has rightfully thrusted his name into those discussions. Up against the best defence in the country, Makie managed the game beautifully, completing 16 of 31 pass attempts for one touchdown, while running in another touchdown on the ground. Makie was given the Bruce Coulter award as the game’s most outstanding offensive player. |
