Toban Talkback

Money, money, money!

Chelse McKee and Magally Zalaya

Have you taken advantage of the dollar’s strength by shopping in the American market?
No. I don’t have enough money to shop for things normally.
What do you think about businesses sacrificing their profit by cutting prices in order to keep consumers in their Canadian consumers?
I think as far as small business goes it isn’t reasonable to expect that [of] small business immediately. As far as big business goes, I think for things, especially books, it’s really important and that books have been unreasonably priced for a long time.
Do you think the one per cent GST cut will affect you?
No, I think that’s bullshit, because as far as the amount . . . [that] the government would have made had this tax still existed, they’re losing a lot of money that a lot of good could be done with.”

Have you taken advantage of the dollar’s strength by shopping in the American market?

I didn’t, no. I’d have to cross the border. Internet shopping? Yeah. I’ve been on Ebay[.com] lots, Christmas shopping.
What do you think about businesses sacrificing their profit by cutting prices in order to keep consumers in their Canadian consumers?
I guess it’s a good idea. It’s about time they did it. The dollar went up 25 per cent this year.
Do you think the one per cent GST cut will affect you?
It’s beneficial for individuals. It’s better than nothing.

Have you taken advantage of the dollar’s strength by shopping in the American market?
Not recently. Haven’t had time to go.
What do you think about businesses sacrificing their profit by cutting prices in order to keep consumers in their Canadian consumers?
I guess that’s a smart thing to do on marketing for them, I guess. Obviously we want the income; we want people shopping at our stores and things like that. It makes sense and it’d be nice for us too.
Do you think the one per cent GST cut will affect you?
Oh, most likely. It’ll be nice to have one per cent less tax. It’s been decreased one per cent already. A gradual decrease is good. We don’t want anything too sudden.

Have you taken advantage of the dollar’s strength by shopping in the American market?
No, not recently. I did go on a trip a couple months ago. That’s when the dollar wasn’t [at parity].
What do you think about businesses sacrificing their profit by cutting prices in order to keep consumers in their Canadian consumers?
I think it’s a pretty smart idea. I mean, companies in Canada want to keep their customers, so it makes just sense to lower their prices.
Do you think the one per cent GST cut will affect you?
I don’t think it’ll affect me that much. It has been lowered one per cent already. I didn’t really notice a difference, I don’t know if another percentage would make a difference.
