Bunk beds and other improvements proposed at arts students’ AGM

Morgan Modjeski, staff

The University of Manitoba’s Arts Student Body Council (ASBC) had their annual general meeting on the Nov. 1 in the arts student lounge.

The ASBC discussed a vast array of topics, most of them concerning what to do with the arts lounge and plans for the faculty of arts.

One of the first things that the ASBC brought into motion was the plan to set money aside for the purchasing of a web domain so the ASBC could have a personalized website. This website would enable students to get in contact with their council whenever needed. A hundred and twenty-five dollars have been set aside from the council’s budget for the web domain, which will be up at the end of November.

Currently ASBC’s budget for the 2007-08 year is $6,158.30.

Another idea mentioned at the meeting was putting bunk beds inside the quiet area of the arts lounge. These bunk beds would enable people to catch up on sleep and would help keep couch traffic in the arts lounge open. (As the meeting was taking place, about six students were sleeping on the couches.)

“Students like to nap, and they need a place to do it,” said Matt Soprovich, a member of ASBC.

A wall in the arts lounge was also suggested to be converted into a “graffiti wall”: a chalkboard or a white board that will be put up so ASBC and students can post messages for others.
