Soccer: Bisons struggle on west coast road trip

The Bisons soccer team had its three game win-streak snapped on the weekend, dropping a pair of games to the University of Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, the Vikes exacted a measure of revenge from a loss to the Bisons earlier in the season with a 1-0 win. Manitoba’s vaunted offence was held to just four shots. Alli Boch notched the lone goal for the Vikes.

Things went from bad to worse for the Bisons on Sunday, Oct. 21, as they were trampled 6-0 by the Thunderbirds. After a competitive first half finished with the Bisons down by just one, but the flood gates opened in the second half, with the Thunderbirds pouring in five goals.

The Bisons finish their regular season with two games against the Regina Cougars in Regina this weekend, before beginning the Canada West playoffs on Nov. 1.

Women’s hockey: Bisons sweep Huskies to remain undefeated

The Bisons women’s hockey team bumped its record to 4-0 over the weekend, winning a pair of games against the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatchewan.

On Friday, Oct. 20, the Bisons fended off the Huskies to win 3-2. Manitoba jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals coming from Leanne Kisil, Erica Holmes, and Brenna Leary. The Huskies responded with two goals in the third period, but Bisons goalie Stacey Corfield kept the win in tact.

The following night, Oct. 20, it was the Huskies that jumped out to grab the early lead, capitalizing on a power-play opportunity five minutes into the game. However, the Bisons responded quickly, tying the game just one minute later with an Addie Miles marker, then putting the game away with goals in the second (Chantal Larocque) and third (Sarah Stebeleski) periods. Corfield made 22 saves in the winning effort.

The Bisons are on the road again this weekend to play the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of games.

Cross-country: Hunter wins third race of season; teams set for CIS championships

Kristjan Hunter continued his terrific season by finishing first at the Manitoba Championships, held at Kilcona Park on Oct. 20. Hunter finished the 10-km race in 33:50. Desire Budigoma (third) and Sheldon Kilcullen (fourth) rounded out the top three Bison results in the male event.

In the women’s 6-km event, Alice Sherwin was the top Bison finisher with a sixth place finish. Alex Bell and Gina Tessman finished right behind Sherwin in the sixth and seventh positions to round out the top three Bison female performances.

The cross-country team has also decided upon which runners will be representing the Bisons at the upcoming CIS championships. Representing for the male team will be Hunter, Budigoma, Kilcullen, Eric Tranquada, Colin Barnett, Paul Carr, and Patrice Leclerq.

Georgette Mink, Sherwin, Melanie Gregoire, Lacey Ginter, Andrea Hesketh, Bell, and Tessman will represent the women’s squad.

The CIS Championships will be held on Nov. 10 in Victoria, B.C. Before then, the Bisons have one more meet — the Stewart Cup — which will be held this Saturday in Edmonton, Alb.

Men’s basketball: Bisons get ready for regular season with Eric Garland Tournament

The Bisons men’s basketball team continued preparation for the upcoming season by participating in the Eric Garland Tournament in Fredericton, N.B., from Oct. 19-21. The team played three games, winning their first then dropping the next two.

In their first game of the tournament, the Bisons defeated the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 72-62. Isaac Ansah led the team in scoring with 27 points.

In game two, the Bisons fell to the Saint Mary’s University Huskies 80-67. Christopher Pereira led the Bisons with 24 points.

In their final game, the Bishop’s University Gaiters dropped the Bisons 79-64. With 19 points, Brian Crowe was the Bisons’ leading scorer.

The Bisons have a pair of exhibition games this weekend, before starting the regular season with a game against their cross-town rivals, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, on Nov. 1 at the U of W’s Duckworth Centre.

Women’s basketball: Bisons split pre-season showdown with Lakehead University

The Bisons women’s basketball team was in Dryden, Ont. over the weekend, where they split a pair of games against the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

On Oct. 19, the Bisons won a thrilling game, 90-86 over the Thunderwolves. Tessa Klassen led the Bisons with 18 points.

The following day the Thunderwolves evened things up by scoring an 87-67 win. Klassen shared top scoring honours with Leigh-Anne Legal-Young, with each finishing with 12 points.

The next time the Bisons see action will be their regular season opener when they take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Nov. 1 at the U of W’s Duckworth Centre.

Men’s volleyball: Bisons fail to pick up a win against the Tigers

The Bisons men’s volleyball team played three matches against the Dalhousie University Tigers in Winnipeg over the weekend but failed to pick up a single win.

On Oct. 18, the Tigers defeated the Bisons 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20).

They took home yet another 3-1 (17-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18) win the following night.

The Tigers then completed the weekend sweep with a 3-0 (25-18, 31-29, 25-23) on Oct. 20.

The Bisons will hope to have all their kinks worked out before they begin their regular season on Nov. 2 with a tilt against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at home at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Men’s hockey: Bisons can’t topple American counterparts

The Bisons men’s hockey team had a break from regular season action and played a pair of exhibition games against two teams from the American college ranks.

On Oct. 19, the Bisons dropped an 8-1 decision to the University of Nebraska-Omaha Stampede.

On Oct. 20, the Bisons fell to the Canisius College Golden Griffin’s 3-2.

The Bisons will resume their regular season schedule when they play host to the University of Alberta Bears on Oct. 26-27.

Bison Sports: Reinfort, Miles named Bison Sports Athletes of the Week

This week’s Bison Sports athletes of the week are Kurt Reinfort of the football team and Addie Miles of the women’s hockey team.

Reinfort hauled in six catches for 85 yards in the Bisons 22-17 over the Regina Rams.

Miles had four points (one goal, three assists) in the Bisons’ two wins over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
