The Manitoban recommends . . .

Tessa Vanderhart, staff

It’s the middle of October and Winnipeg is booked solid. No, really — there are not-to-be-missed engagements at every available venue in Winnipeg. If you’re ready for one last hurrah before the snow flies, this is what the Manitoban recommends you check out for the week of Oct. 17 to 24.

10. WCMAs

Oct. 18-21 • Moose Jaw, S.K. • $20 on Ticketmaster

While this isn’t an event you can just, say, show up to, the Western Canadian Music Awards worth mentioning because for a quick drive out to Moose Jaw (a scant 646 km away) you can see nearly all of the best performers in Western Canada. Probably your favourite live band is there right now. Why aren’t you?

9. U of M wind ensemble concert

Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m. • Great Hall, University College • $5 for students

8. Paprika

Oct. 22 7 and 9 p.m., Oct. 23 9 p.m. • Cinematheque • $6

Beautiful, political, Japanese anime. Check out the Manitoban’s review, or just check it out.

7. Thermals feat. the Paperbacks

Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. • the Albert • $15 at ticketworkshop.com

Fugazi meets the Decembrists, featuring one of Winnipeg’s best bands.

6. Old Man Ludecke and Trees

Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. • The Wayne Arthur Gallery, 186 Provencher • $15

There’s a double treat to be snatched next week: Haligonian banjo-bard Old Man Ludecke in a gallery playing host to “Trees: Inside and Outside the Box.”

5. Waste Reduction Week

Oct. 15-21 • everywhere

It’s Waste Reduction Week! Using less is more efficient than recycling, especially when there are no caretakers to clean up after you.

4. The Sadies/the Raveonettes

Oct. 23, 8 p.m. • Pyramid/West End • $15 or $17.50

No, they’re not playing together — you’ll have to choose between the ghastly grunge-rock of the Sadies and the postmodern pop of the Raveonettes. Is there a wrong choice?

3. Professional bull-riding

Oct. 20 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 21 2p.m. • MTS Centre • $24.50-$39.50

If you thought you had to go to Calgary to see bull-riding, well, you were wrong.

2. Oedipus Rex

Oct. 16-20, 8 p.m. • Theatre By The River, 444 River • $5 students

Classic Sophocles for $5. What could be better? Listen to the haunting Regina Spektor song of the same name to prepare.

1. Motifs and Repetitions

Basement of University College • Oct. 17 and 18 — 12:30, 7:30, 12 p.m. • free

If you don’t know what a Lunch B.H.A.G.G. is, it’s time to find out.
