Strike, Strike, and more Strike

Chelse McKee and Magally Zelaya, Staff

Dustin Reimer, Third-year arts

What do you think about the CAW strike?
“I was here for the last strike. It’s a nuisance, but I guess if they need what they are asking for then I guess that’s what they should do.”
How, if at all, have you been affected by the strike?
“It hasn’t really.”
What about in terms of food services?
“I bring my own lunch.

Mitchel Tripple, Fourth-year psychology

What do you think of the CAW strike?
“It’s kind of inconvenient from the getting food perspective. I understand that the unions are here to fight for the worker. I probably don’t know enough about it to have a terribly informed opinion.”
How, if at all, have you been affected by the strike?
“I’ve been getting a lot less coffee so I’ve learned to wean myself off caffeine. I’ve noticed that the University Centre much quieter, so I’ve kind of enjoyed spending more time in and around here. There’s less hubbub that I have to deal and less people that way. That’s good. The [pickets] have all been nice. They’ve been informative. They’ve answered questions. They don’t seem to be hostile or anything.
What about in terms of food service?
“It’s been inconvenient. It’s nice to be able to have somewhere to go for a cup of coffee or a bite to eat. Degree’s lineup’s ridiculous.”.

Kristen Klassen, PhD and grad studies student for applied health sciences

What do you think of the CAW strike?
“I understand they want fair working conditions but I can’t say I’ve done the work to research any of their issues.”
How, if at all, have you been affected by the strike?
“It’s certainly affected in terms of opportunity to get coffee and get food on campuses. Other than that, personally no, it hasn’t had a huge affect.”
What about in terms of food service?
“Because of the program I’m in, I travel between campuses and so I do depend on campus food services to eat. So it has made it difficult but the student-run services like IQ’s and Degree’s have sort of helped and managed that.”

Chisulo Sipula, Third-year science

What do you think about the CAW strike?
“I’m not really too sure about what the conditions are of the strike. I’m not sure why they’re striking. I have been noticing things are a lot dirtier and that’s unfortunate.”
How, if at all, have you been affected by the strike?
“I can’t say it has affected me that much, other than the fact that I can’t get coffee anymore, which is killing me.”
What about in terms of food service?
“I like to bring my own stuff. So not that much.”
