Cross-country:
Men finish fifth, women 12th at Roy Griak Invitational
Kristjan Hunter won his second consecutive race of the season, beating out 254 other men at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. on Sept. 29. Hunter finished the 8,000-metre race in 25:27, two seconds ahead of his closest competitor. As a team, the Bisons finished in fifth place out of 25 teams. Paul Carr (24th place), Colin Barnett (26th), Sheldon Kilcullen (65th), and Mitchell Man (75th) rounded out the top five Bison men.
In the women’s race, the Bisons finished in 12th place out of 30 teams. The leading performer for the Bisons was Georgette Mink, who finished sixth place out of 283 women racing. Mink ran the 6,000-metre race in 23:02. Alice Sherwin (36th place), Andrea Hesketh (90th), Melanie Gregoire (96th), and Lacey Ginter (100th) rounded out the top five Bison women.
Women’s volleyball:
Bisons take gold at University of Regina Invitational Tournament
The Bisons women’s volleyball team continued to impress in pre-season action, winning the University of Regina Invitational Tournament on Sept. 28-30. The team blew out the competition in the preliminary rounds, winning matches against the University of Winnipeg, University of Alberta, Brandon University, and University of Regina, all in straight sets fashion.
The four victories put the Bisons in the gold-medal match, where they were pitted against the Alberta Golden Pandas. Although this match turned out to be their toughest of the tournament, the Bisons still pulled out straight sets victory (26-24, 26-24, 25-14).
Women’s hockey:
Bisons fall to American counter-parts
The Bisons travelled down to the U.S. for a pair of games — one against Bemidji State Beavers, and one against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
On Sept. 28, The Bisons fell 1-0 to the Beavers. Stacey Corfield stopped 19 shots in the losing effort.
The following night, the Bisons lost a 3-1 decision to the Fighting Sioux. Becca King scored the lone goal for Manitoba.
The Bisons begin their Canada West regular season with two homes games against the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Oct. 5-6.
Men’s hockey:
Rob Smith named team captain; team falls to Manitoba Moose prospects
As the Bisons make their final preparations for the upcoming season, they announced their team captain and alternate captain for the year.
Wearing the “C” for the second consecutive season will be defenceman Rob Smith. Chris Falloon will be alternate captain for the second consecutive year as well.
In the team’s final pre-season test, the Bisons fell 7-1 to the Manitoba Moose prospects on Sept. 26 in Steinbach. Colin Lafreniere was the Bisons goal scorer.
The Bisons Canada West regular season begins on Oct. 5-6, when the team visits the Regina Cougars for a pair of games.
Golf:
Bisons women’s golf team finishes season with third place finish
The Bisons women’s golf team completed their 2007 season with a third place finish at the University of North Dakota Invitational in Grand Forks, ND, which took place from Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
Leading the way for the women’s squad was Angela Klindtworth, who finished tied for first place. Sarah Stebelski followed a few stroked behind in fifth place, with teammates Faye Zachedniak, Lauren Rousseau, and Chantal Vielfaure all finishing in the top 50.

Quick hits
• Kristjan Hunter and Georgette Mink were named Bison Sports athletes of the week, for the week ending Sept. 30, 2007, for their impressive performances at the Roy Griak Invitational.
•Bisons Sports’ anti-bullying campaign, Bisons Against Bullying, has received a $6,500 grant from the Winnipeg Foundation. The grant will be used over the next two years to increase the profile and presentation of the campaign. This year’s program will begin in November, and will run until the end of May 2008.
