In the beginning . . .

Oh ye scientists of little faith

JESSICA STEWIN

Creationism does not deny the existence of micro-evolution, the development of variability within a species. Nor is creationism blind to scientific evidence or knowledge. No scientist has been ever been able to form a living organism from inorganic substances (although DNA could theoretically be created by its core components). This blueprint for life requires an organism to interpret this code into the production of proteins for an organism to function. Even if a random swirling mixture of methane gas and cosmic rays did produce DNA, the code would still need pre-existing life forms to interpret it.

Macro-evolution is not recognized as a legitimate theory by creationists. The theory has not been proven, and requires people to place their faith in the hands of a theorist’s ill-supported sentiment. Evolutionists often criticize creationists for basing their arguments on faith; but it is precisely to that argument that I raise a mirror. Evolutionists place their faith in science in the same way creationists place their faith in God.

Evolutionists often suggest that the Earth is millions of years old in order to discredit creationism. However, the idea of a young Earth is not one presented in biblical text. Biblical text is often used as an outline for creationism. The Book of Genesis opens with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” This critically implies that a world was already present at the time of creation.

Although formless and empty, this world may have been teaming with life previously. Later in the story of creation, God demolishes all of civilization out of frustration. This story of the destruction of civilization was, as some may know, the story referred to as “Noah and the Ark.” God promises to not destroy the world again by flood, which could have happened many times previously. This story provides a theory that would allow the existence of dinosaurs in that pre-Noah world.

Even in light of the fact that biblical text does not limit creationists to believe in a young Earth, there is nonetheless evidence for this belief, as well. The rate of deceleration of the Earth’s rotation on its axis, if constant through its lifetime, would have caused the earth to stop revolving long ago. The amount of space dust on the moon would be much deeper than it is currently. Finally, almost all comets in the solar system would have been destroyed by the sun if the earth was as old as scientists have projected.

Further to the discredit of evolution, there are billions of missing links in the evolutionary chain. Fossil records have not been able to fully support evolution, and generally the fossil record is consistent with biblical accounts of creation. Organisms present today emerge in the fossil records without evidence of a gradual evolution, suggesting their sudden emergence into the world.

The complexities of such organs as the eye, ear, or brain make it hard to believe in the random formation of living organism. These are unlikely to appear by “natural” processes, and the sudden emergence of complex organ formations have not been reproduced in the scientific community. Walt Brown, author of In the Beginning: Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood, asks the question “If a reptile’s leg evolved into a bird’s wing, wouldn’t it become a bad leg long before it became a good wing?” Darwin’s theory of natural selection suggest that the bad leg would have to be favorable to the organisms survival over the course of many generations until it became the final product of a wing. I wonder, in what environment would this be the case?

A general lack of evidence, coupled with the fact that the major criticisms against creationism are based on an evolutionist naiveté, suggests that the basis for the idea of evolution is nothing more than faith in science over God. Funny, I thought that was supposed to be a creationist’s biggest fault.

You need a lot of faith to believe in something with limited evidence and based exclusively on a fabricated myth. Evolutionists are such a faithful bunch.
