SOCCER: Colpitts named Canada West, then CIS female athlete of the week

In addition to being named one of the Bison athletes of the week, and one of the weekly Best Bisons by the Manitoban, Karli Colpitts of the Bisons soccer team can add a couple more distinctions to her name: Canada West and CIS female athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 16.

Colpitts earned the honours by scoring three goals in the Bisons’ road sweep of the Fraser Valley Cascades and Trinity Western Spartans two weekends ago. Colpitts’ six goals on the year have her tied for top spot in Canada West scoring.

This is the first time that a Bison athlete was named CIS athlete of the week since Jan. 15, 2006 when Jon Lundgren of the Bisons men’s basketball team was given the distinction. The last female to get the honour was Caley Miskimmin on Oct. 2, 2004.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Bisons go undefeated in pre-season Lea Marc Invitational tournament

The Bisons were one of 11 CIS teams that participated in the Lea Marc Invitational, which was held in Winnipeg from Sept. 21-23. The Bisons played four games over that span, winning all four games in convincing fashion. Manitoba dropped only one set over the course of the tournament.

On Friday, the Bisons beat the Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-15).

The following day, the Bisons played two matches. In match one, they defeated the Trinity Western Spartans, the team that ousted the Bisons from the CIS championships last season, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-14). In their second match, they beat the Guelph Gryphons of the OUA 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18).

On Sunday, the Bisons finished their tournament with a 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-13, 25-23) win over the QUAA’s Sherbrooke Vert-et-Or.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY: Bisons lose in shootout of UMSU Invitational finals

From Sept. 21-23 the Bisons held the UMSU Invitational tournament at the Max Bell Arena. This four team tournament was the Bisons’ first pre-season action. Team Manitoba, the Bantam AAA Sharks, and Shattuck St. Mary’s provided the opposition for the Bisons.

In the round robin portion of the tournament, the Bisons finished with a record of 2-1. On opening night, they defeated Team Manitoba 3-0. Scoring goals for the Bisons were Leanne Kisil, Katherine O’Rourke, and Addie Miles.

They followed that win with a 4-2 victory over the Bantam AAA Sharks, thanks to a three-point effort by Sarah Stebeleski, but were stopped in their tracks in their final round-robin game 6-2 by Shattuck St. Mary’s.

Their two victories, however, were enough to set up a rematch with Shattuck St. Mary’s in the finals. In the final match of the tournament, the Bisons battled Shattuck to a 3-3 tie after regulation and the five-minute overtime. In the shootout, the Bisons failed to get anything past Shattuck’s goalie, Rebecca Ruegsegger, losing the shootout 1-0.

The Bisons kick off their regular season on Oct. 5, at home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

MEN’S HOCKEY: Bisons fall short at Huskie Classic

The Bisons participated in the pre-season Huskie Classic in Saskatoon from Sept. 21-22.

On Friday, they lost 5-1 to the Alberta Golden Bears, Canada West’s top team from a year ago. The Bisons’ lone goal-scorer was Chris Benias.

On Saturday, the Bisons lost to the Calgary Dinos 8-3. Calin Wild scored two goals, with the third coming from Cole Hunter.

The Bisons conclude their pre-season with a matchup with the Manitoba Moose on Sept. 26 in Steinbach. They begin their regular season conference play by travelling to Regina for a pair of games from Oct. 5-6.

BISONS SPORTS: Football’s Howard and Soccer’s Rurak named Bison Sports athletes of the week

Mike Howard of the football team and Stephanie Rurak of the soccer team were named Bison Sports athletes of the week, for the week ending Sept. 23, 2007.

Howard was the football team’s leading tackler in their victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sept. 22. He finished with nine total tackles, two of which went for a combined loss of 23 yards.

Rurak had three points in the soccer team’s two victories over the weekend. In Saturday’s 2-0 victory win over Lethbridge, Rurak scored the game winning goal and assisted on the second goal. In Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Calgary, Rurak chipped in with an assist.
