Soccer:

Bisons continue to roll in Canada West

The Bisons women’s soccer team solidified their status as a top contender in Canada West this weekend, taking home two road victories against two very tough teams.

On Friday, Sept. 14, The Bisons were in Abbotsford, B.C. to take on the Fraser Valley Cascades. Caley Miskimmin and Karli Colpitts each scored early to stake the Bisons to a 2-0 lead at halftime. That was all the support that goaltender Ashley Forbes needed, as she made six saves to secure the Bisons’ 2-1 victory.

On Saturday, the Bisons were in for a much tougher task, as they took on the number 4-ranked Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, B.C.. Once again, however, the Bisons showed that they were up to the task. Colpitts scored goals at minutes 78 and 86, while Forbes was brilliant again in making three saves for the shutout victory.

The Bisons return home this weekend, as they play host to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sept. 22 and the Calgary Dinos on Sept. 23.

Cross-country:

Bisons run to victory

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams got their season off to the right start, each taking home victories at the Ron Pynn Invitational in Grand Forks, N.D..

The men’s team was dominant in victory, sweeping the top three positions and six of the top eight spots. Kristjan Hunter was the winning Bison, finishing just ahead of Colin Barnett and Desire Budigoma. Also finishing in the top 10 were Paul Carr, Patrice Leclercq and Eric Tranquada.

On the women’s side, a Bison also took home top honours, with Georgette Mink finishing ahead of all runners. Alice Sherwin finished in fifth position, while Lacey Ginter and Andrea Hesketh each just finished outside of the top 10.

The cross-country team’s next meet is on Sept. 29 in Minneapolis, Minn. for the Roy Griak Invitational.

Men’s hockey:

Bisons take two in preseason

The Bisons men’s hockey team began their season over the weekend with two pre-season games in Dauphin, Man..

On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Bisons defeated the Regina Cougars by a score of 4-2. Stewart Thiessen led Manitoba with two goals, while Wade Davidson and newcomer Mike Hellyer each netted one. Goaltenders Justin Harris and Steve Christie combined their efforts for the victory.

The following night, the Bisons took on the defending Canada West-champion Saskatchewan Huskies and came out victorious in another 4-2 game. Davidson added his second goal of the weekend, while Calin Wild, Nolan Walker and Colin Lafreniere had a goal apiece. In this game the netminding of Harris combined with Krister Toews’ performance for the victory.

The Bisons will continue their pre-season this weekend when they travel to Saskatoon, Sask. for games with the Alberta Golden Bears and the Calgary Dinos.

Golf:

Men’s teams finish fifth and eighth in Bemidji
