Pancakes but no coffee — yet

No presentations were held at the UMSU council meeting on Sept. 13, but many more were promised by UMSU president, Gary Sran.
In the president’s report, Sran spoke about UMSU’s involvement in this year’s U1 orientation. He said that orientation has “actually been going on for three weeks now,” since the Bannatyne campus begins orientation a week before the Fort Garry campus.
Some examples of UMSU involvement include tours around University Centre’s businesses, speaking at IGAC’s welcoming ceremony and provided pancake and doughnut breakfasts. UMSU served an estimated 7,800 pancakes to students.
Sran said that two meetings UMSU had scheduled, one with president Emöke Szathmáry and one with the parking advisory committee, were cancelled due to individual circumstances. The meeting with the parking advisory committee has been rescheduled to Nov. 7.
Mike Einarson, vice-president (external), reported, that the renovations to IQs are not yet complete. UMSU’s projected date of completion, Sept. 4, was not met because a new ice machine is yet to be delivered and installed.
Kristen Roos, human ecology student council representative, asked council how IQs plans to compete with the new Starbucks in Elizabeth Dafoe library.
Einarson stated that the renovations, lower prices and a new ice machine will make IQs a competitor. The ice machine will enable IQs to prepare iced coffee drinks to compete with Starbucks frozen beverages.
The following committees had not met and were unable to submit a report in council but all stated that they are still in need of members: finance, health and insurance, campaigns and government relations, environmental sustainability, SIGPAC, and the policy and procedure committee.
At the meeting, Sran stated that the open positions for the committees would be posted on the doors of the UMSU office on Sept 17. At press time, the positions had not yet been posted.
