Golf teams get off to great start
The men’s and women’s Bisons golf teams started out their seasons on the right note — by each winning their first tournaments of the season.
The men finished first in the Concordia Invitational, which was held at the Meadows Golf Course in Moorhead, M.N. on Sept. 7. Lucas Skelton led the men, finishing third overall with a +1. His younger brother Jesse finished fifth with a +3. Eric Johnson was only one shot behind Jesse Skelton after shooting a +4.
On the women’s side, the women finished first in the Cobber Open, held at the Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, M.N. on Sept. 7. New team member and Bisons hockey star Sarah Stebeleski led the women’s team with a +11, good for sixth place. Faye Zachedniak also placed in the top 10 at the tournament, finishing eighth with a +12.
The women’s team had a second tournament at the Wildflower Golf Course over the weekend — the Cobber Invitational. The Bisons finished in second place, behind the University of North Dakota. Zachedniak and Stebeleski once again led the Bisons contingence, finishing in sixth and seventh place respectively. Lauren Rousseau also earned herself a top-10 finish, finishing in the 10th spot.
Bisons kicker earns CIS athlete of the week honours
Rookie kicker Scott Dixon’s dream first week as a Bison was capped off in style, when he was named CIS special football athlete of the week.
Dixon kicked six field goals in the Bisons’ 36-13 victory over the Regina Rams on Sept. 2 — becoming only the third player in Canada West history to accomplish that feat, and doing it in his very first game. Dixon finished the game 6-7 on field goal attempts, with a long of 40 yards. He accounted for 22 of the Bisons’ 36 points on the afternoon.
In addition to being named CIS special teams football athlete of the week, Dixon also took home Canada West special teams football athlete of the week and Bison Sports athlete of the week honours.
