Offence and defence impressive in victory

The Manitoba Bisons started out their season in style, coasting to an easy victory over the Regina Rams on Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium in Regina by a score of 36-13.
After falling behind 10-5 following a Teale Orban strike to Graham Mosiondz early in the second quarter, the Bisons (1-0) offence got into gear, countering with 20 consecutive points, 12 coming off the foot of new starting kicker Scott Dixon.
After out-kicking last year’s Peter Scouras for the starting job in training camp, Dixon started his first game at the CIS level. Prior to joining the U of M, Dixon was a standout for the Vancouver Island Raiders of the Canadian Junior Football League, becoming the CJFL’s all-time leading scorer.
It didn’t take long for Dixon to leave his mark with his new team.
When all was said and done, Dixon was good on six of his seven field goal attempts, and accounted for 22 of the Bisons’ 36 points. Dixon’s six field-goal effort was just one shy of tying the Canada West record held by the Saskatchewan Huskies’ Matt Kellett, who had seven versus the Alberta Golden Bears in 1996.
Quarterback John Makie looked to have his offence in mid-season form, racking up a total of 309 yards. Mackie finished the game 15-33, for 185 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with receiver Randy Simmons for a 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Bisons defence did an outstanding job limiting the the Rams’ (0-1) vaunted passing attack. Last year’s Canada West player of the year, Orban, was limited to just 104 yards on 13-32 passing. In total, The Rams’ offence could only muster 153 yards of total offence.
As was the case last season, Manitoba’s versatile ground attack was a contributing factor to the Bisons’ success. The Bisons’ spread the carries around for a total of 151 yards. Karim Lowern led the way with 74 yards on 13 carries, while Matt Henry ran for 56 yards on six carries and Neil Fulgueras added 42 yards on four carries.
Simmons and Simon Blaszczak led all Bisons receivers with four catches a piece. Kenton Onofrychuk and Justin Shaw each had six tackles for the to lead the team.
For the Rams, Chad Goldie was Orban’s go-to receiver, finishing with six receptions. Rookie running back Taylor Kidby had a team-high 38 rushing yards on seven carries. Regina’s leading tackler was Steve Wilson with eight tackles. With that, Wilson became the Rams’ all-time career leader in tackles.
Both teams travel west next week. Manitoba will travel to B.C. (0-0) next Saturday to take on the UBC Thunderbirds, while the Rams will head to Edmonton to square off with the Alberta Golden Bears (0-1).
