Where's the best place (ON CAMPUS) to . . .
TESSA VANDERHART, STAFF
Eat?
6. Fisheries in the basement of the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans building: greasy and delicious, if a far hike.
5. The Greenhouse Café in the arts complex. If you have to eat Aramark, make it a mini-pizza from here. The wide selection of soups are generally also fairly edible.
4. Wise Guy’s — not because it’s good — because it’s not — but because the beer-soaked atmosphere is conducive to socializing. On Thursdays, the cheap steak sandwich is worth it.
3. Pita Pit in University Centre: it’s not good that a restaurant that’s only open three hours a day (11 a.m.- 2 p.m.) is No. 3 on this list, but what can I say? It’s Pita Pit.
2. Degrees Diner in University Centre: a close runner-up, Degrees has the best vegan food in the south end of Winnipeg, if not the province. The (fair-trade organic) coffee and burgers are excellent; also try chai lattes, the soup of the day, and the poutine and curry fries.
1. The Daily Bread Café, in St. John’s College. Cheap, delicious, free wireless Internet, and the best fair-trade coffee on campus.
Study?
7. St. John’s College Library or the Quiet Room.
6. The Manitoban office backroom.
5. The second-floor study lounge in the Drake Centre.
4. The Benedictson Reading Room in the Arts Lounge.
3. The “wind tunnels” — carrels beneath Armes.
2. The Icelandic Reading Room in Dafoe Library.
1. Don’t. Study at home!
DON’T try to study in the Fireplace Lounge, just outside of the Manitoban office.
Make out?
5. The Fireplace Lounge, just outside of the Manitoban office.
*We actively discourage this.
4. The leather couches in the Arts Lounge.
3. The
2. The couches in the back room of the Manitoban office.
1. The stacks in the third floor of Dafoe Library, at 2:15 p.m. next Thursday.
Sleep?
See “Make out.”
Print or make photocopies?
5. UMSU Digital Copy Centre, University Centre: too expensive for making notes, but great for making projects.
4. The libraries: load up your student card with some change and print for five cents/page.
3. The computer room in the tunnels: between science and arts is the holy grail of cheap printing — free, on the old dot matrix printers. (You know, the ones with the reams of paper that you have to rip the hole-punched rims off of).
2. Disability Services: volunteer to take notes for another student, then ask if you can do some copying.
1. The Manitoban office, 105 University Centre: volunteer staff (those who have contributed three or more times) get free printing and copying!
Shop?
5. The Toban classifieds (www.themanitoban.com)
4. University Centre Pharmacy
3. The lost and found at Security Services in University Centre.
2. The BookStore
1. Posters around campus: notably, in the science tunnel, the arts complex, the basement of University College and throughout University Centre.
USE THE WASHROOM?
5. Helen Glass basement
4. St. Paul’s College lounge area
3. Third-floor Drake Centre
2. Fourth-floor Tier
1. Administration building. (I hear there’s fresh flowers daily!)
SMOKE?
5. The white castle across from Duff Roblin. (Note: good for a special trip.)
4. The tunnel between Duff Roblin and University College — there’s usually a dirty hippie to keep you company.
3. The Art Barn
2. The Wallace building
1. On the lawn of the Administration building
READ FOR FREE?
5. The hundreds of magazine subscriptions in the third floor of the Dafoe Library.
4. The free Globe and Mail and National Post in the Drake Centre every day.
3. Online, as described in the “libraries” section.
2. From the whack of free publications near the east entrance to University Centre.
1. From free daily newspapers, magazines, national and international student publications, and long-forgotten textbooks in the Manitoban office.
