Universiade dreams

Canada won 16 medals at the 2007 Summer Universiade — the Olympics of university sport — held Aug. 8-18 in Bangkok, Thailand.

According to Bison Sports, three members of the U of M men’s volleyball team competed for Team Canada, winning a silver medal. Turkey won gold.

Other Bisons participating included volleyball star Ashley Voth, top scorer on the national women’s team for the tournament, and Desiree Scott, who helped the women’s soccer team to a 10th-place finish.

The Universiade was Canada’s best since 1991, when Canadian students received 40 medals. Russia won the medal count with a total of 92; China followed with 87, but the most gold. Canada’s 16 medals were good enough for an 11th place finish.

Bisons boast 68 Academic All-Canadians

In 2006-07, the Bisons matched their record-high 68 Academic All-Canadians. Athletes qualify by achieving a GPA equivalent to 3.5/4.5 while participating on a university athletic team.

This is 22 per cent of the total Bison squad, an increase from about 20 per cent last year, according to Bison Sports.

A few highlights of the results, as noted by Bison Sports:

-Women’s basketball (six out of 13), women’s volleyball (eight out of 19), and women’s soccer (five of 12) had the highest per centages of Academic-All Canadians. Bison women constitute 44 of the 68 winners.

-15 of the 68 recipients are students in the faculty of kinesiology and recreation management.

-13 of the Academic All-Canadians, or 19 per cent, received a 4.0 (A) or higher.

Two Bisons were nominated for CIS Top 8 Academic All-Canadians: volleyball setter Katie Davidson logged a perfect 4.5 GPA in science, in addition to playing in 73 (out of 75) regular season games and being named a Second-Team All-Canadian. Hockey captain Rob Smith has been on the Dean’s honour list in arts for the last two years. The regional Top 8 will be announced at the end of August.

Soccer provincials

The last round of Manitoba soccer provincials were held Saturday, August 18. Team Sweat Shack beat out Team United 4-1 for the women’s title. Two Bisons athletes, Caley Miskimmin and Karli Colpitts, play for the team.

The winning men’s and women’s teams will proceed to the Challenge Cup National Club Championship in Halifax, Oct. 3-8.

Bisons shorts

Bisons Football will be playing an exhibition game against the Winnipeg Senior Mustangs/Bison alumni on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.. Admission to University Stadium is free. Eleven of 12 offensive starters and nine of 12 defensive starters will be returning from last year’s 8-0, perfect-regular-season team, which lost out in the semi-finals.

The Bison women’s hockey team is having open tryouts beginning Sept. 6. See umanitoba.ca/bisons for more details.
