Shortchanging the Canadian Human Rights Museum and the People
I am writing in regards to the proposed location of the Canadian Human Rights Museum at The Forks in downtown Winnipeg. While I am completely in support of such a project and the attention it will bring to our city, I am very concerned and disappointed that it will be built at The Forks. I believe the wonderfully unique architecture of the Museum will be lost amongst what has become the ‘clutter’ of The Forks. How many things can we cram into this space? The lack of parking and the congestion that will result will only serve to mar the experience of going to the Museum. I would urge Gail Asper, the city of Winnipeg, the Government of Manitoba, and the Government of Canada, to consider an alternate location such as an existing green space, a city park, or somewhere just outside the perimeter. Take the Royal Canadian Mint as an example. The Mint would not be as majestic if it was situated at The Forks, nor would its own unique architecture be as prominent. The Mint’s location and its vast green space make it a beautiful landmark and a popular tourist stop on the Trans-Canada Highway. Let’s give the Canadian Museum of Human Rights the location and space it needs in order for it to truly stand out and shine. I understand the concept of The Forks being a symbolic “gathering place,” however, building the museum there, will in my opinion, prove to be a mistake which will ultimately be detrimental to The Forks, our city, and the appeal of the Museum itself. I’d like a place where I can take my kids for an ‘”experience” which would, in addition to the museum itself, include space for contemplative walks outside, natural scenes, and openness; not parking hassles, skyscrapers, and commercialism.
I have spoken with several people who share the same feelings and we are beginning to mobilize ourselves against the powers that be who have not consulted with the public regarding this matter. It seems a decision has already been made without asking the people’s opinion. That seems unfair.
Sincerely,
Miguel Lécuyer
