Fitness modelling?

Amie Seier

Ever wonder what happens when a bodybuilding competition meets a beauty pageant? While the image of Arnold Schwarzenegger wearing a tiara is a wonderful thing, unfortunately, that is not the case. Instead, what you get is a hybrid of the two competitions called “fitness modelling.”

Fitness modelling is a unique form of modelling that combines elements from bodybuilding and beauty pageants. As in bodybuilding, fitness models are judged on their athletic shape. However, there is much less concentration on muscle mass and virtually no posing. And similar to a beauty pageant, fitness modelling competitions include a theme wear and swimwear round. Although, unlike a beauty pageant, there is much more focus on highlighting the competitor’s fit physique.

So, how can one become a fitness model? Well, of course a lot of vigorous training would be involved, but once one has the ultimate body what else would he or she need to know?

Well, one of the first things that prospective fitness models should know is that there are multiple categories in such competitions. Some examples would include fitness modelling, bikini modelling, muscle modelling, bodybuilding, figure modelling, and dance routines and fitness routines. Fitness modelling and bikini modelling both require competitors to be in shape and look fit, whereas muscle modelling and bodybuilding are more focused on muscle mass with a more relaxed feel. Figure modelling is a mix between both muscle modelling and fitness modelling. Dance and fitness routines allow competitors to show off their talents.

Each one of these categories is judged based on specific rules and requirements. Judges are not only looking for fitness but for health and personality. Fitness modelling judges look at confidence and attitude. There is a much more relaxed feel to the competition compared to that of bodybuilding competitions.

There are two rounds to a fitness competition. The first round is the swimwear round. The swimsuits have to make the competitors attributes show through. It should show not only their physique but style and personality. Females must wear high heels (clear bottoms are preferred so that the judges are focused on physique and not on shoes) and a two-piece bathing suit. Males must wear a short or brief-style bathing suit with bare feet.

Round two is the theme-wear round. In the theme-wear round, competitors dress in themed outfits that show off their individuality and style. The outfits must still show off their physique, which means they must be form-fitting or not covering up too much skin. Their themes can be anything from a plumber to Batman.

For those interested in learning more about fitness modelling, the Toronto-based competition FAME model search championships will be making a stop in Winnipeg at the Blush Ultra Club on May 24. Hosting the event is Ainsley McSorley, a U of M student and fitness model who has won international fitness modelling events. This will be the last chance for Canadian competitors to qualify for the FAME world championships.
