Women’s volleyball
The Bison women’s volleyball team has added five new recruits to its team for the upcoming season. Four of the five recruits come from the Winnipeg high school system, while the fifth is a player who played for the Ohio State University Buckeyes of the NCAA this past year.
From Dakota High School, the Bisons have recruited Nicole Hall, a five-foot-five libero. As the team captain, Hall led her school to the provincial “AAAA” final four.
The Bisons also recruited two players from Miles Macdonell Collegiate: Christine Reimer and Melissa Unrah. Reimer is a five-foot-nine left-side hitter who was ranked the number-six high school volleyball player in the province. Unrah is an inch taller than her fellow Miles MacDonell recruit but plays the same left-side position. She was ranked the number-10 high school player in the province.
From Vincent Massey Collegiate (Winnipeg), the Bisons have recruited Dayne Roemermann, a six-foot setter. Among other accomplishments, Roemermann played on the gold-medal-winning Team Manitoba at the National Team Challenge Cup in 2007.
The fifth new recruit, Kristi Hunter, comes back to her home province after playing one season as a Buckeye. At five-foot-nine, Hunter has the ability to play both middle and left-side positions.
Men’s basketball
The Bison men’s basketball team hopes the recruitment of four new players for the upcoming 2008-09 season will help the team improve on its difficult six-win campaign from this past year. The four new recruits are Nathan Dixon, Xavier Smith, Cameron Wicker and Ryan Fahandeg.
Dixon and Smith are two guards who played for the Lakeland College Hustlers in Alberta last season. Dixon is a five-foot-11 point guard who has the ability to put the ball in the hoop. He averaged 20.1 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per-game last year. Smith is six-foot-two and averaged 16.7 points-per-game on 55.2 per cent shooting.
Wicker, a six-foot-five forward out of Detroit, Mich., comes to the Bisons after playing two years of junior college. He’s a tenacious rebounder who also has a nose for the basket (16 points-per-game).
Fahandeg is a six-foot-two forward out of Kelowna Secondary School in Kelowna, B.C.. He averaged 23 points and eight rebounds per game last year.
Women’s hockey
Nellie Minshull, an assistant captain for Balmoral High School last season, has committed to the Bison women’s hockey team for the 2008-09 season.
Minshull, a five-foot-10 forward, scored 50 points in 49 games this past year. In addition to playing for her high school team, she was also a member of the silver-medal-winning Team Manitoba at the 2007 Canada Winter Games and a member of the bronze-medal-winning Team Manitoba at the 2007 Under-18 National Championships.
