Men’s hockey: MacGillivray to return as head coach next season
Bison Sports has announced that Don MacGillivray will return as head coach of the Bison men’s hockey team for a third season in 2008-09. This comes after former head coach Mike Sirant requested and received a third-year leave of absence.
The Bisons have shown a marked improvement under the tutelage of MacGillivray. They missed the playoffs in his first season as head coach but finished this year’s regular season at .500 (13-13-2) and finished fourth in the conference. They would go on to defeat the UBC Thunderbirds in the quarterfinals of the Canada West playoffs before bowing out against the University of Alberta Pandas in the semifinals. MacGillivray was awarded the conference coach of the year award thanks to his role in the Bisons’ one-year turnaround.
MacGillivray originally replaced Sirant as the team’s head coach in July 2006. Sirant was given a two-year leave of absence from the Bisons to become the sports director and head coach of the Danish national men’s ice hockey team.
Men’s hockey: Toews signs tryout contract with Manitoba Moose
Bison men’s hockey starting goaltender Krister Toews was signed to an amateur tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose.
Toews is coming off a terrific season between the pipes with the Bisons. He played in 24 of 28 regular season games, compiling a 2.99 goals-against-average and .897 save-percentage. Toews had 13 wins and two shutouts. He also led the team to the Canada West semifinals.
Football: the Bisons name Mitchell as new offensive co-ordinator coach
The Bison football team has named Vaughn Mitchell as the team’s new offensive co-ordinator coach for the 2008 season.
Prior to being named offensive co-ordinator coach, Mitchell has held several positions within the Bison football coaching staff. He has spent time as offensive line coach, running backs coach, offensive co-ordinator, and run game-protections co-ordinator. In his seven years as a co-ordinator, the Bisons have amassed a 46-9-1-1 record.
“I feel my previous experience as an offensive co-ordinator will be an asset. I know I can bring in new ideas and fresh approaches without discarding the best parts of an offensive system that helped us become national champions last year. I am looking forward to working with a great staff of offensive coaches as well as proven winners such as John Makie, Darryl Conrad, Matt Henry and Terry Firr,” Mitchell told Bison Sports.
Mitchell replaces Jeff Stead, outgoing offensive co-ordinator coach, who left the Bisons to take a full-time assistant coach position with the University of Alberta Golden Bears in January.
Football: five Bisons selected to attend the 2008 CFL evaluation camp
Five members of the 2007 Vanier-Cup-winning Bison football team participated in the 2008 CFL evaluation camp, held in Toronto, Ont. March 14-16. The five Bisons were defensive back Brady Browne, line backer Kenton Onofrychuk, wide receiver Terry Firr, and defensive linemen Justin Cooper and Justin Shaw.
The camp was an evaluation of 54 of Canada’s top football prospects. General managers, head coaches, and scouts from all eight CFL franchises were in attendance preparing for the CFL Canadian draft, which is April 30.
The Bisons had the highest number of representatives at the camp.
