GSA SENATOR CANDIDATES
GSA election Feb. 27-29
The Graduate Students’ Association represents the thousands of grad students at the U of M, the fastest-growing population at the university. This year’s elections are especially important, as the GSA became autonomous only at the beginning of this academic year.
This year only one slate of candidates is running for election. Unlike last year, when two full slates — one of incumbents and friends, and another of international students — competed for the second-floor GSA offices, this year’s slate is a balanced mix of doctoral and master’s, Canadian and international students. For more information on the GSA elections, contact CRO Trish Kelley at cro@umgsa.ca.

What experience do you bring to the position?
I currently serve as a senator at the university senate for GSA. I want to continue this important job. Because I am currently a senator, this experience has developed my ability to effectively raise graduate students’ concerns in Senate.
Why will you be a good senator?
As an association, we must increase our effort to lobby university administrators and government on issues such as intellectual property, academic freedom, copyright reform, and research commercialization. I just want to add one more thing, we must work on maintain the current fee system and lobby for the elimination of the international differential fee.
I look forward to serving graduate students as senator this upcoming year. I could do a fantastic job representing the GSA in university senate. And I encourage you to vote for me for experience and commitment. And vote for me to build … a graduate movement
PhD electrical engineering third year
What experience do you bring to the position?
Last year, I was a science affairs officer of the students’ assocation. I had this position for one year. and on the planning committee of the electrical students association in the department, a member.
Why will you be a good senator?
They should vote for all of us, because it’s our elections. I have my previous experience in different social work. I also work toward defending the students.
I’m planning to increase the multicultural relationship between students. So the majority of positions are coming from different countries. It would be nice to try to increase this kind of multiculturality.
Also, I’m trying to increase the social aspects of students’ life as well as defending graduate students from all other offices on campus.
first year civil engineering master
What experience do you bring to the position?
I think I have the passion. Of course, I usually, in my former university, served on some student organizations. I think the operation system is totally different here. So I also want to know something about the student organizations here, and how it operates.
Why will you be a good senator?
I just know that I have this passion to do this work, and I like it. . . . And what I really want to do, just to do something good for the graduate students. Of course, this tuition fee is a bit higher, and I want it to be lower. Some of my friends, even my Canadian friends, think it is too high. We have the power to run some workshops or social events here, because our graudate students are very busy, so actually we need to know much more friends here. We need to organize more social events to benefit ourselves.
