The Background Info
Name: Stephane Lenoski
Sport: hockey
Hometown: Winnipeg, Man.
Position: defence
Jersey Number: 12
Manitoban: When and how did you get your start in hockey?
Stephane Lenoski: When I was five years old, my dad, who was a goaltender himself and was a proud Canadian [who] loved hockey, wanted to introduce his son to hockey. Once I got on the ice, I loved it right away and I haven’t stopped since.
M: Why did you choose to play at the U of M?
SL: A couple of reasons, I knew [Bison’s head coach] Don MacGillivray really well from before he recruited me when I was 15 — we always had a good relationship. And I knew that he was doing loads with the program [at U of M] and he wanted to bring it in a new direction. And, as well, being able to play at home and live with my parents not worrying about the sort of expenses that you would have somewhere on the road.
M: Do you have any game-day rituals or superstitions that you follow?
SL: I usually lie down for about an hour, eat, then have a coffee to wake up a bit.
M: How do you celebrate a big win?
SL: We sing a song in the dressing room and, depending on what night it is, if we get a chance to celebrate we might go out with the boys.
M: What is your personal greatest sporting accomplishment so far in your career?
SL: I guess just when I was 18 we went to the finals in the WHL championship [with the Brandon Wheat Kings] and almost won the Memorial cup. That was pretty exciting, that whole playoff run.
M: Favourite musician?
SL: Bon Jovi.
M: Favourite television show?
SL: Sports Centre.
M: Favourite hockey player, or a player that you like to emulate your game around?
SL: Francois Bouillon — he plays for the Montreal Canadiens, my favourite team. I was a bit smaller growing up, and he’s about five foot 10. He hits like a train, he’s tough, and he’s a great skater. I just feel like he’s a well-rounded player.
M: Favorite book?
SL: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.
M: Favourite sport, other than hockey?
SL: Tennis and golf.
M: If you could sit down for dinner with anyone, dead or alive, celebrity or non-celebrity, who would it be, and why?
SL: Jesus, because I don’t think it gets much bigger than that.
