Barnes had a total of 16 kills, three assists, two aces, and 24 defensive digs in a two-game weekend series with the University of Alberta Pandas, which saw the Bisons win one game.
Crowe and the men’s basketball team also split their weekend series, theirs with the University of Regina Cougars. In the two games, Crowe averaged 13 points (0.523 field-goal percentage), 6.5 rebounds, and four assists.
Bison men’s volleyball player diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Drew Venables, starting setter and co-captain of the Bison men’s volleyball team, was diagnosed with Stage II ‘A’ Hodgkin’s lymphoma and began an aggressive four-month treatment on Feb. 12 in his hometown of Kamloops, B.C..
After a weekend series against the University of Brandon Bobcats on Jan. 19, Venables became very sick and noticed some unusual lumps. The fourth-year player was diagnosed with lymphoma but was given clearance to continue playing. Venables travelled with the team to take on the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in a weekend series that ended Jan. 26. After the second game, Venables explained his situation to the rest of his team and told them that he would be staying back in his hometown for further tests and procedures. He did not participate in the Bisons’ final games of the season.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma, more commonly known as Hodgkin’s disease, is a specialized form of lymphoma — a cancer that forms in the body’s lymph system, which is part of the immune system. Representing approximately eight per cent of all lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease is considered one of the most curable forms of cancer, with a five-year survival rate of 81 per cent.
Prior to the diagnosis, Venables was having a spectacular season, his best in his four years as a Bison. He reached career highs in games played (60), kills (63), assists (534), defensive digs (89), total blocks (33), and aces (9).
