Meet the Bisons

Speedy Kristjan Hunter

The Background Info

Name: Kristjan Hunter

Sport: Cross-country and track and field

Hometown: Winnipeg, Man.

Manitoban: When and how did you get your track and field and cross-country?

Kristjan Hunter: I kind of always ran in junior high and elementary school. I just did all of the little cross-country meets and track meets. Turned out I was pretty good at it, so I ended up quitting hockey and soccer.

M: Why did you choose to run at the U of M?

KH: Well, I went to school for my first year on scholarship down in the States, and I really didn’t like it there. I ended up coming back and staying here. I really like the atmosphere here; I really like the coaching. We have good facilities.

M: Do you have any race-day rituals or superstitions that you follow?

KH: Not really. I try and stay ritual-free. I know there is a certain amount of time before the race that I have to eat to feel well. But in terms of lacing my shoes up or anything like that, not really.

M: How do you celebrate a big race win?

KH: Well, it depends on how big the race is. If it’s something pretty big and it’s the end of the season, we’ll go out and party, but usually, we’ll just try and keep it low-key.

M: What is your personal greatest sporting accomplishment so far in your career?

KH: Winning CIS [in the 3000-metre] on the home track [in 2005].

M: What is your favourite movie?

KH: Top Gun or The Princess Bride.

M: Favourite musician?

KH: Either Green Day or the Foo Fighters.

M: Favourite television show?

KH: Family Guy.

M: Favourite book?

KH: Once a Runner [by John L. Parker].

M: Favourite sport, other than cross-country or track and field?

KH: I have to go with NFL football.

M: Favourite athlete?

KH: I’m a pretty big Tony Romo fan.

M: If you could sit down for dinner with anyone, dead or alive, celebrity or non-celebrity, who would it be, and why?

KH: I’d have to say [cross-country and track and field head coach] Claude Berube, because he’s really hard to get down and sit down to talk to after hours. It would be interesting to see how he performs after hours.
