Vanier Cup champs named province’s top team for 2007

The 2007 Vanier Cup champ University of Manitoba Bisons have been named Manitoba’s top team in 2007 as voted on by the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (MSSA).

The MSSA awarded the Maurice Smith Memorial trophy to the 2007 U of M Bisons football team at its 52nd annual awards dinner on Jan. 27.

The other finalists for the award included the 2006-07 U of W Wesmen men’s volleyball team and Jennifer Jones’ curling team.

Women’s volleyball on top for 10th consecutive week

For the 10th time in as many weeks, the Bison women’s volleyball team has been ranked the number 1 women’s volleyball team in the nation.

The rankings, which were released on Jan. 22, are based on the results of a nationwide coach’s poll.

The women’s volleyball team has been, in a word, dominant, this season. They currently hold a record of 15-1 and are riding a 10-game win streak. Their lone defeat this season was a thrilling five-setter to the No.2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Nov. 10.

In other top-10 news, the Bison women’s hockey team didn’t slip far, despite back-to-back losses to the No. 2-ranked University of Alberta Pandas. They fell to number five from number four a week earlier.

The Bison men’s track and field team stayed in the top 10 as well, coming in at number nine in the latest rankings, after being ranked number three a week earlier.

Former Bison signs with the Blue Bombers

Former Bison athlete Riley Clayton signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Jan. 23.

Clayton, 24, starred as an offensive lineman for the Bisons from 2004-06. He was part of a Bison offensive line that allowed the fewest quarterback sacks in the Canada West conference in 2005 (10 sacks allowed in eight games). That season, he was named a Canada West all-star and participated in the East-West Bowl.

He was drafted by the Calgary Stampeders in the fourth round of the 2006 CFL Canadian draft and made his one and only game-day appearance on Oct. 21 of that year against Winnipeg.
