Bison Sports Athletes of the Week: Morrissette and Venables

The Bison volleyball teams had a terrific weekend. Both teams hosted the Trinity Western University Spartans, and both came away with two hard fought sweeps. Because of these terrific results, a player on each team has been named a Bison Sports Athlete of the Week.

The women’s volleyball teams’ recipient is Sarah Morrissette. She finished the weekend having amassed an impressive 20 kills, 17 defensive digs, and three blocked shots over the two game series.

Drew Venables receives the male athlete of the week honour after dishing out 66 assists in the two-game series with the Spartans. Venables also added nine kills, 11 defensive digs, two service aces, and four and a half blocks.

Male track and field team No.1 in first rankings of new year

After an impressive showing at the Prairie Dual last week, where the Bisons men’s track and field team won all four of their duals, the men’s side was rewarded for their outstanding performance by being ranked as the No.1 men’s team in the nation, according to the latest CIS poll. This is the first time that the men’s team has been the No.1-ranked team in the nation since January 2004.

The women’s team also cracked the top 10 in the latest ranking, which was released on Jan. 9. They were ranked at No.7, but were only the fourth-ranked Canada West team, falling behind the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (No.4), the University of Regina Cougars (No.5), and the University of Calgary Dinos (No.6).

The rest of the top-10 rankings were released a day earlier. The Bisons women’s volleyball team remained atop the women’s volleyball rankings, while the women’s hockey team held strong at No.4 in the women’s hockey rankings.
