Bisons embark on anti-bullying campaign
The Bisons sports program, in conjunction with the University of Manitoba Athletes Council, embarked on the second phase of the “Bisons against Bullying” campaign. The program is expected to run from Nov. 30 to the end of May. This second phase comes after a successful phase was run in February 2006.

The program consists of Bisons athletes visiting classrooms of students in Grades 4, 5, and 6. The athletes present to the students on various topics that deal with bullying, such as: “What is bullying? Why do some people get bullied? And what can you do if you are being bullied?” The same athletes then follow up at a later date to monitor the progress that has been made by the students.

The program kicked off on Nov. 30 when the Bisons visited St. Avila Elementary School. More then 40 schools have signed up for the program.

Women’s hockey: Bisons tame Huskies in Saskatchewan
The Bisons were looking to go into the winter break on a high note, and they were able to do just that with a pair of victories over the weekend against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Bisons took the first game, on Saturday night, by a score of 5-2. After two goals, by Shannon Hoogsteen and Jaclyn Van Deynze, were matched by the Huskies, the Bisons pulled away with three unanswered goals. Sarah Stebelski had one of those three goals, while team captain Leanne Kisil added the other two. Stacey Corfield made 16 saves in the win.

Back at it again on Sunday, the Bisons once again came out the victors, this time shutting the Huskies out 3- 0. Special teams played a big role in the victory, as the first two Bisons goals came with a man-advantage. Stephanie Messner and Meghan Ross were credited with the power-play goals. Leanne Kisil tallied her third goal of the weekend with an emptynetter. Dana Hoogsteen made 23 saves to earn the shutout.

The Bisons next see action on Jan. 5 and 6, as they travel to Edmonton for a pair of games against Alberta.

Women’s basketball: Bisons and Cougars battle to a split
The Manitoba Bisons and Regina Cougars showed just how close the competition is in the Canada West conference, as the two teams battled in two very close games.

Friday night saw the Cougars take the opener 74-72. After the Bisons jumped out to an early eight-point lead in the first half, the Cougars were able to climb back, and head into the break only down by two. As the two teams continued to battle, the final outcome came down to the final plays of the game, where Regina’s Chelsea Cassano was able to grab her own rebound, and sink the follow-up, putting the Cougars ahead for good.

The second game of the weekend saw the Bisons bounce back with a 76- 65 win. The big win can be attributed to the Bisons’ ability to not only get to the free throw line, but also their ability to make their free throws. The Bisons went to the charity stripe 30 times, and made it count for 24 points. Michele Hynes led the team with 18 points.

The Bisons next set of games is on Jan. 4 and 5, as they play the Winnipeg Wesmen in a home-and-home series.

Men’s basketball: Bisons end drought against the Cougars
Friday night saw the Regina Cougars extend their personal win-streak against the Bisons to seven games, while Saturday night saw the Bisons snap that win-streak in exciting fashion.

In a game much closer than the final score indicates, Regina pulled out a 85-77 win on Friday night. The game turned in a span of 30-seconds that saw the Bisons get whistled for a technical and flagrant foul. The easy points were enough to propel the Cougars to victory.

Saturday night’s game was an even closer affair, which went down to the very last seconds. Manitoba came out scorching hot from the field, building as much as a 24-point lead. Soon after, however, the Bisons went ice-cold. The Cougars battled back into the game with a 17-0 run, before finally pulling even with 20 seconds left in the game. The Cougars pulled ahead 92-91 on a Paul Gareau layup with just 13 seconds left. With the Bisons on the verge of a heartbreaking loss, Graeme Mitchell saved the day, as he raced the length of the court and buried a jump as time expired, giving the Bisons a 93-92 win.

The Bisons regular season continues in the new year, when they take on the Winnipeg Wesmen for a home-and-home series on Jan. 4 and 6.

Men’s hockey: Bisons head into break on losing note
The Bisons will head into their short holiday break in the worst possible way: coming off two losses to the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The first game of the weekend saw the Huskies pound the Bisons in a 7- 2 victory. Saskatchewan was clearly the better team from the outset, as they got out to a 3-0 lead before the first period ended. The Bisons made a goalie change heading into the second period, but were still unable to stop the Huskies offence.

The Bisons came out much fiercer in the weekend’s second game. Even though they slowed down the Huskies attack, the Bisons offence sputtered, leading to a 4-0 shutout loss. Jeff Harvey made 25 saves in his shutout win.

The Bisons will have a couple weeks to get back on track, before resuming conference action with two home games against Alberta on Jan. 12 and 13.

Women’s volleyball: Bisons keep undefeated season alive, barely
The Bisons were in tough over the weekend as they visited the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of matches, maybe much tougher then they expected. Through it all, however, the Bisons were still able to come out of the weekend with their win streak in tact.

Friday night’s victory was Manitoba’s toughest victory to date. The Bisons squeaked out a 3-2 (25- 23, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 20-18) win. In the final set, the Bisons had to stave off three match points, before a Sarah Morissette kill gave the Bisons a matchpoint of their own. A Thunderbird error ended the wild match.

In Saturday night’s match, the Bisons came out determined to not make the same mistakes as the night before. They did just that, winning 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-20) in straight sets. Morissette led the Bisons with 11 kills in the match, while Ashley Voth had a match-high 16 digs.

The Bisons look to continue their undefeated season after their break, when they host Alberta on Jan. 5 and 6.
