Men’s basketball: Bisons snap six-game skid
After having their losing streak stretched to six games Friday night with a loss to the Simon Fraser Clan, the Bisons got back in the win column with a Saturday-night victory over the Trinity Western Spartans.
The Bisons started their weekend home-stand with a 66-55 loss to Simon Fraser, their sixth straight defeat. The Bisons received a boost with Randy Simmons, fresh off his season with the Bisons football program, playing in his first home game of the season, but they could not stop the Clan shooting attack. The Clan shot a smoking 51 per cent from the field, and 47 percent from downtown. The Bisons’ leading scorer was Darcy Cross, who poured in 19 points.
Saturday night finally saw the Bisons losing streak come to an end, as they defeated Trinity Western 82- 76. Leading the Bisons to victory was Isaac Ansah, who had a gamehigh 34 points, including two clutch free-throws to seal the deal. Cross continued his good weekend with an 18-point, 13-rebound game.
The Bisons are now 2-6. Their next action is Friday night, when they host the Regina Cougars at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Women’s basketball: Bisons salvage split against West coast foes
After falling at the hands of the Simon Fraser Clan on Friday, the Bisons bounced back with a dominating showing against the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday.
The Bisons were in tough on Friday night, as they matched up against the No. 3-ranked Clan. The Clan used their clear size advantage to earn a 76- 60 victory. The Bisons’ leading scorer was Rachel Hart with 16 points. Sarah Holder added a double-double, with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Manitoba bounced back with a much stronger effort on Saturday night, earning themselves a 78-49 victory. The Bisons fell behind 37- 31 at half-time, but picked up their defensive intensity and held the Spartans to just five field goals and 15 per cent shooting in the second half. Holder was the Bisons’ leading scorer with 17 points, and added 15 rebounds for her second doubledouble in as many nights.
The Bisons (5-4) look to keep their winning ways going, as they host the Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
Men’s hockey: Bisons lose in overtime; swept by Cougars
The streaking Bisons, winners of their previous five games, were stopped in their tracks in Regina over the weekend, as they were defeated twice by the Regina Cougars, including an overtime loss on Saturday night.
The Bisons’ difficult weekend started on Friday night with a 4-2 loss. After falling behind in the first period, the Bisons battled back in the second period with goals by Jon Cara and Aaron Starr. The two teams headed into the third stanza knotted at two, but the Cougars pulled away thanks to two goals from Jordan McGillivray in a less than three-minute span. Cougars goaltender Clint Chalmers stifled the rest of the Bison attack to preserve the victory.
The two teams were at it again the following night. The Bisons got on the board first, with a Robin Allison goal four minutes into the game. Regina’s Shayne Emmons knotted the game 10 minutes later. Canada West’s leading goal-scorer Jason Weitzel pulled the Cougars ahead with a tally in the second period, but the game was once again knotted when Starr scored for the Bisons in the third period. The two teams went to overtime, and looked to be headed to a shootout until the Cougars’ Caine Pearpoint got one past Krister Toews with just two seconds remaining in the extra frame. The Cougars picked up the 3-2 overtime victory.
The Bisons (7-8-1) finish the first half of their season this weekend with two games in Saskatchewan against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Men’s volleyball: Bisons bounce back after tough loss to earn a split
On any given night, any team can defeat another, as the previously win-less Calgary Dinos showed when they upset the No. 5-ranked Bisons on Friday night. Manitoba was able to bounce back the following night, however, and leave Calgary with a split.
The Dinos, and first-year coach Rod Durrant, picked up their first win of the season on Friday night with a 3- 2 (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 15-8) win. The Bisons looked lackadaisical opening the night, falling behind 16- 5 in the opening set. They snapped out of it in time to make the first set interesting, before Calgary finally closed it out. That Bisons momentum continued for the next three sets, but the Dinos proved to be a worthy opponent, as each set saw some tight volleyball action. The fifth set was close as well, until the Dinos finished off the Bisons with a five-point run. Toon van Lankvelt and Josh Klassen led the Bisons with 14 and 13 kills respectively.
The Bisons came out much stronger on Saturday night, but once again found themselves in a dogfight. This time, however, the Bisons were on the right side of a 3-1 (25-23, 23- 25, 25-23, 25-22) victory. The Bisons victory was fuelled by the powerhitting of Klassen, who ended the night with one of his match-high 23 kills.
The Bisons (4-3) come back home to host the Alberta Golden Bears for two matches on Dec. 2 and 3.
Women’s volleyball: Bisons impressive in Calgary victories
It was a battle of two top-three ranked teams over the weekend, as the Bisons travelled to Calgary to take on the Calgary Dinos. In the end, it was Manitoba that was able to pull out a pair of five-set victories, furthering their undefeated streak to five matches.
Friday night saw the two teams trade sets, and match points, before the Bisons finally got the win, 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-15, 26-24). Ashley Voth was a force for the Bisons on both the offensive and defensive end, leading the team with 14 kills and 19 digs.
Saturday night saw an equally tight battle between the two teams, but once again, the Bisons came out on top 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 14-25, 15-9). As the score indicates, the Bisons got out to a quick start. They used a pair of two-man blocks to close out both sets. Calgary, however, showed their grit, bouncing back to take the next two sets with the help of Joanna Niemczewska and her game-high 21 kills. In the fifth and deciding set, the Bisons got out ahead early, and this time closed the match out on their first try, thanks to a Voth kill. Voth led the Bisons for the second night in a row, with 18 kills. Defensively, four Bisons led the team with 11 digs apiece.
The Bisons (5-0) continue their season this weekend as they travel to Vancouver and battle the UBC Thunderbirds for two matches.
