Men’s volleyball: Bisons too much for Cougars, again
The No. 5-ranked Manitoba Bisons did what they have always done under head coach Garth Pischke’s watch, defeat the Regina Cougars. With victories at the Investor’s Group Athletic Centre on both Friday and Saturday night, Pischke pushed his personal win-loss record against the Cougars to an amazing 118-0, while his team improved their regular season record to 3-2.
Friday night saw the Bisons defeat the Cougars 3-0 (25-16, 25- 16, 25-14) in dominating fashion. Leading the Bisons’ attack was Toon van Lankvelt, who was absolutely on fire, finishing the game with 16 kills. van Lankfelt was also a force on the defensive end, leading the Bisons with seven blocks, followed closely by Matt Balchin with six.
Saturday night saw much of the same from the Bisons, who once again cruised to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) victory. The Bisons' offensive attack was very balanced, as van Lankvelt and Jeff Zylstra led the team with seven kills apiece, followed closely by Balchin with six and Josh Klassen with five.
Manitoba next sees action on the road at the Calgary Dinos this Friday and Saturday.
Women’s basketball: Bisons enjoy West Coast split
The Bisons were on the road over the weekend, as they travelled to British Columbia to take on the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds. After pulling out a hard-fought victory Friday night against the Vikes, the Bisons failed to end the weekend on a high note, as they were defeated by the Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
After getting out to a slow start against Victoria, the Bisons picked up the tempo enough to hold a 39-35 lead at half-time. The two teams continued to trade the lead throughout the second half, as the game went down to the final possessions. With the score tied at 70-70 and three seconds to go, Rachel Hart was able to get to the foul line, where she calmly made her two free throws. The Vikes had one last chance to tie the game but came up short, as the Bisons took home the 72-70 victory. The Bisons’ leading scorer was Melanie Schlichter, who had 23 points.
Riding that wave of momentum, the Bisons went to UBC and for three quarters went toe-to-toe with the No. 2-ranked Thunderbirds. After only trailing by five points after three quarters, the Bisons seemed to run out of gas, as the Thunderbirds pulled away in the fourth quarter. When the final buzzer sounded, the final score had the Thunderbirds earn their victory with a score of 82-68. Kaitlyn Flett was the Bisons’ leading scorer with 22 points.
The Bisons’ (4-2) next action comes at home at the Investors Group Athletic Centre this Friday and Saturday.
Men’s basketball: Bisons continue early season struggles
The Bisons were in tough this past weekend, as they were on the road to do battle against the No. 2-ranked and No. 4-ranked teams in the nation. And despite some outstanding individual efforts, the Bisons return home with nothing to show, as they fell to both the Victoria Vikes and the UBC Thunderbirds.
Friday night saw the Bisons in McKinnon Gymnasium to visit the No. 4-ranked Victoria Vikes. The Vikes offence was rolling, shooting 43 per cent from the field, and scorching the Bisons with seven three-pointers. Isaac Ansah had a game-high 30 points, but no other Bison was able to crack double digits, as Manitoba fell 75-55.
The Bisons were in for just as tough a game Saturday night, as they looked to stop the undefeated, No. 2- ranked UBC Thunderbirds. Despite getting a much more balanced scoring game from a team aspect, the Bisons still struggled offensively, shooting a mere 30 per cent from the field. Ansah once again led the Bisons in scoring with 17 points.
The Bisons (1-5) look to get their season on track with a pair of home games at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on Friday and Saturday night.
Women’s hockey: offence stalls, as Bisons drop 2
Coming off a bye week, the No. 7- ranked women’s hockey team seemed to be out of rhythm, as they were defeated in two games straight by the UBC Thunderbirds. The Bisons offence was never able to get going over the two games. Thunderbirds goalie Milinda Choy stopped every shot she faced, on her way to the first two shutouts of her career.
Choy, a first-year netminder, began her amazing weekend by stopping 29 shots on Friday night. A powerplay marker by Emily McGrath- Agg seconds into the second period was more then enough to earn UBC the win, but just for insurance, Jenny Mahovlich added an empty net goal, giving the T-birds the 2-0 win.
Saturday night was almost a mirror-image of Friday night’s performance. Choy stood on her head once again, this time stopping all 27 shots against her. One mistake by Bisons goaltender Stacey Corfield was once again her downfall. The T-birds’ game-winning goal came 13 minutes into the first period, off the stick of Alison Koyanagi. For the second night in a row, Mahovlich added an empty-netter in the final minute of play, to make the game 2-0.
The Bisons (5-5) return home this weekend, and host the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday night at the Max Bell Centre.
