With the influx of new finances, the U of W plans to build a new science complex. The complex, which will expand the university’s space by up to eight per cent, will provide the university with new labs, classrooms, and office space.
Earlier in 2006, the U of W had submitted a proposal to the province stating it was in need of new facilities for its science faculty, more particularly its departments of biology, chemistry and environmental studies. The proposal also elaborated on a plan for creating a new environmental college.
“We made this presentation to indicate that this was one of the urgent needs of the university,” said Dan Hurley, executive director of government and external affairs at the U of W.
“The new state of the artscience complex is part of our government’s ongoing commitment to rebuilding the infrastructure at all post-secondary institutions,” said Diane McGifford, minister of advanced education and literacy. “It will provide opportunities for the university’s growing student population and particularly for those pursuing the expanding areas of environmental studies.”
Furthermore, Premier Doer also declared the government’s commitment to a fundraising campaign: the province will donate $1 to the U of W for every $2 it raises. With this, the province could provide as much as $15 million in additional funding to the university.
“In other words,” said Hurley, “if we’re able to raise enough money, the U of W could see as much as $25 million total.”
The new facility will also house the new Richardson College for the Environment. The college, which was announced on Sept. 12 by Hartley Richardson, president and chief executive officer of James Richardson & Sons, is expected to greatly advance the U of W’s science and environment programs.
The Richardson Family, Firm, and Foundation donated $3 million for the college and an additional $500,000 to develop an environmental green space.
The college will offer studies in fields such as forest ecology, urban ecology, and environment and health studies, and is to be located on Portage Avenue, between Langside and Furby Streets.
The new facility is estimated to cost $3 million, and construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2007.
