Men’s hockey: Bisons cool off Dinos
The Bisons won their first games at home this past weekend in impressive fashion, knocking off the red-hot Calgary Dinos, who came into town riding a seven-game win streak. The Bisons took Friday night’s game 5-4 in overtime, and completed the weekend sweep the next night with a 5-2 victory.
The first game saw the Bisons start out slow. They were forced to overcome a three-goal deficit, and that they did, with goals coming from Marco Pellizzari, Kyle Nichols, Aaron Starr, and Travis Kornelson forcing the extra frame. The Bisons capped off their comeback when Richard Wood scored halfway through overtime.
It was the same story for the Bisons on Saturday night, as a slow offensive start found the team down by two. The team was helped tremendously by the terrific goaltending of Steve Christie. The offence finally got things rolling six and a half minutes into the second frame, when Calin Wild scored to make the game 2-1. In the following eight minutes, the Bisons went on an offensive tear. Jon Cara had two goals, while Nick Cowan got one, and Wild added another. The Bisons defence held off the Calgary attack to preserve the win.
Women’s basketball: Bisons simply too much for Lady Bobcats
A strong Bisons offensive showing over the weekend proved to be too much for the Brandon Lady Bobcats, as Manitoba took home two victories — 84-51 on Friday night, and 88-37 on Saturday night.
In the weekend’s first game, the Bisons came out of the gates fast, running out to a 12-0 lead. The team cruised to victory from there, never trailing throughout the game. Sarah Holder was the Bisons’ leading scorer with 19, while Rachel Hart had a great all-around game, going for 18 points, handing out six assists, and swiping the ball five times.
The Bisons ran their record to 3-1 on the season, with their easy victory Saturday night. Their team defence was solid, holding the Lady Bobcats to single digits in the first two quarters. Leigh-Anne Legal- Young and Melanie Schlichter led the way for the Bisons with 12 points apiece.
Cross-country: Bisons finish their season with CIS Championship
The Bisons finished their crosscountry season by competing in the CIS Championships in Laval, Que. over the weekend.
On the men’s side, the Bisons finished in 12th place in the 10 km race. The leading Bisons runner was Kristjan Hunter, who finished in 42nd position with a time of 34:42. The fastest time was 32:29, and came from Geoffrey Kerr of Calgary. Guelph took home the team title.
The Bisons women finished in 14th place in the 4 km race. The leading runner for the women was Georgette Mink, who finished with a time of 18:52. Megan Brown of Toronto was the fastest woman of the meet, finishing with a time of 17:10. Guelph finished off the team sweep by winning the women’s team event as well.
Men’s volleyball: Bisons split
weekend series with UBC
The fifth-ranked Bisons were in for
a tough battle last week, going on
the road to match up against the
seventh-ranked UBC Thunderbirds.
The Bisons were able to take the first
match, with a straight-set victory
(25-19, 26-24, 27-25), but were
unable to complete the sweep, falling
3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-14) the
next night.
Despite the straight-set victory, the Bisons win on Thursday night was no cakewalk. Manitoba had to fight off several set points in both the second and third sets in order to pull out the victory. Toon van Lankvelt and Matt Balchin led the Bisons with 10 kills each. Jeff Zylstra was Manitoba’s leading blocker, with eight.
U BC came out much stronger in Friday night’s rematch. The terrific serving of Christoph Eichbaum helped UBC to victory. For the Bisons, Balchin once again led the team in kills with 14, while van Lankvelt was the team leader in blocks with six.
