Football: Bisons complete
perfect regular season
With their 43-20 victory against the
UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night,
the Manitoba Bisons completed their
second 8-0 season in history. Early in
the game, it looked like the Bisons’
perfect season was in question, as
the Thunderbirds got out to a quick
14-0 lead in the first quarter. But,
as they have done over and over this
season, the Bisons offence kept their
composure, and kept plugging away
at the UBC defence. The Bisons got
back into the game on 40 and fouryard
touchdown runs by Karim
Lowen, then finally took the lead for
good on a 22-yard run. The defence
woke up after the early-game scare,
holding the Thunderbirds to two field
goals the rest of the game.
Soccer: Bisons end season on
high note
The Bisons soccer team ended their
season with a pair of home victories
against the Regina Cougars. Saturday
afternoon saw the Bisons keep the
Cougars off the scoresheet by a score
of 4-0. Sunday saw a similar Bison
effort, with Manitoba taking a 3-1
victory. Goalkeeper Ashley Forbes
was terrific during the two games,
allowing only the one goal on six shots.
On the offensive end, the Bisons were
led by Laura Locke, who registered
three goals and one assist in the two
games, and Caley Miskimmin who
added one goal and four assists.
The Bisons finished the season with
a 6-7-1 record. The six wins and 19
points set new team records.
Women’s hockey: Bisons
sweep weekend set with the
Saskatchewan Huskies
The Bisons women’s hockey team
got back to their winning ways, by
picking up two key victories over the
Saskatchewan Huskies at the Max Bell
Centre this past weekend. On Friday
night, the Bisons got on the board
early, when Leanne Kisil capitalized
on a Bison powerplay six minutes into the game. Sarah Stebeleski
added another powerplay marker in
the second, while goaltender Stacey
Corfield did the rest, to preserve the
Bisons' 2-0 victory.
On Saturday night, the Bisons went with Dana Hoogsteen between the pipes, but came out with the same result. Scoring didn’t come until the third period, when Manitoba’s Chelsea Braun got past the Huskie goalie. Saskatchewan’s Robin Ulrich got the Huskies on the scoreboard for the first time time the weekend 10 minutes later, but the Bisons came back quickly with goals coming from Meghan Ross and Brenna Leary, giving the Bisons the 3-1 victory.
Men’s Hockey: Bisons no match
for Bears
The Bisons men’s hockey team were
in Edmonton this past weekend, to
face off with the defending national
champions and number-one ranked
Alberta Golden Bears. Friday night,
the Bisons fell to a score of 4-2, when
the Golden Bears got out to a threegoal
lead, then fended off the Bison
comeback. The loss spoiled a terrific
effort by Bisons goalie Krister Toews,
who made 31 saves in the game.
Saturday night saw the Alberta trio
of Richard Hamula, Dylan Stanley,
and Harlan Anderson, combined for
10 points, in a Golden Bears victory,
6-4.
Quick hits
The men’s basketball team announced
that Darcy Cross and Brian Crowe
would be co-captains for the team
this upcoming year. Both players are
in their fourth year, and are expected
to be big contributors to the team’s
success.
The men’s basketball team hosted the pre-season Applebee’s Invitational tournament over the weekend. The Bisons won both their games, picking up victories over University of Western Ontario (69-65) University of Mary (54-47). Brian Crowe was named tournament MVP.
