Hello, stranger who I’ve never seen before in my life

MELISSA HIEBERT STAFF

Role-playing is an undisputed staple of the sexual world. The wonderful thing about role-playing is that it is completely open to anything and everything. You can tailor a scenario to fit your exact wants and desires, and become the embodiment of the perfect object of lust for your partner. You can spontaneously pick a stock fantasy off of the shelf, or spend time intricately constructing detailed characters and back stories that take hours of build-up. Role-playing is an excuse not only to be whoever you want, but also to be with whoever you want.

The possibilities are endless. Characters can range from typical (the nurses and the school teachers) to downright weird (but we won’t get into that right now . . . ). You can be from any era, from primitive cavemen to space travellers in the future. You don’t even have to be human: you can pretend to be a cyborg, a race from Lord of the Rings, or some weird half-cat half-human hybrid (don’t ask). Fantasies can stem from movie references (Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean), or can be derived out of something from our current day society. Or, (for the gamer population) you can pretend that you are a level- 60 warrior trying to land some hot level-10 bar maid.

And that’s just the characters. The situations themselves encompass even more possibilities, with plots, themes, and motives that have the potential to become more intricate than most novels. You are limited only by your imagination (and your “lasting” power).

But why do people find roleplaying arousing? Often, people just want to spice up their sex life or to try something new. Naturally, when you do something over and over again (no matter how enjoyable) it can get repetitive and boring. Roleplaying will always add an element of excitement, as there is a never-ending list of characters, situations, and scenarios to enact.

People also naturally have desires and fantasies to fulfill. Maybe you have a secret desire to be “dirty” when you are usually straightedge. Demanding when you are typically reserved. Or, maybe you secretly desire the “aloof stranger” or “powerful villain,” whereas your partner is regularly a timid mama’s boy through and through.

Often role-playing fantasies can also stem from some kind of desire for a certain position of power. One need not be into S&M to fulfill power desires of this sort, as many roleplaying scenarios often encompass both dominant and subservient roles. Cop/prisoner scenarios leave room for a more obvious sort of physical dominance, while other fantasies are predominantly geared towards positions of societal power or status, such as teacher/student fantasies. Scenarios of these types can involve putting people into positions in which they are “forced” to comply (or else), or some other display of authority or control.

However, role-playing does have the potential to take the intimacy out of sex. If you want to think of your partner as “the mysterious cowboy” then that is one thing, but once you start actually thinking about a specific person (other than your partner), or acting out a scenario about someone else that actually exists, role-playing can take on a whole new meaning. Also, role-playing has the potential to become a habit that renders straightup sex with your partner boring or unappealing. Make sure you and your partner are both on the same page to avoid the potential of him or her getting pissed off and throwing your bare-ass outside, leaving you to scramble nakedly home.

BF: What role-playing scenario have you done or would you want to do?

F/Science: Um, on the Internet, the most popular would be . . . doctor/patient ones, which is pretty gross.

BF: What is your opinion on costumes and role-playing in a sexual context?

M /U1: It’s good!

F/U1/1: You probably shouldn’t do it a ll the time, but to mix is up, sure.

M/UI: am pro-costume!

BF: What role-playing scenario have you done or would you want to do?

M /U1: The one from Star Wars!

M /U1: Yeah, the cop one is good.

F/U1/2: It depends if you want to be thrown down or not!
