Soccer: Bisons win one, lose one on the road

Needing a big weekend to push for the playoffs, the Bisons managed a split on the road against two tough teams. On Saturday afternoon, the Bisons were in Saskatoon to battle the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Bisons had everything working in the game, making easy work of the Huskies, 3-0. The game-winner came off a header by Desiree Scott. Adding the insurance goals were Laura Locke and Jennifer McLaren. Ashley Forbes had a terrific day in net, stopping all eight shots that made it her way.

The Bisons then traveled to Edmonton to face the number 5- ranked Alberta Pandas. After the Pandas missed on some of their early opportunities, the Bisons’ Caley Miskimmin showed them how it’s done, scoring the game’s first goal nine minutes in. The Bisons couldn’t hold the lead, however, as the Pandas’ Amy Ciezki bounced a shot off a Bison defender and into the net minutes before halftime. Ciezki was in on the game winner as well, setting up her teammate Laura Perri for an easy goal in the 70th minute. That was it for scoring, as the Pandas took the victory 2-1.

Men’s hockey: Saskatchewan Huskies complete weekend sweep of Bisons

It was a tough weekend for the men’s hockey team, as they were defeated in two match-ups with the Saskatchewan Huskies. Despite the score, Friday night's game was much closer then the 7-4 score indicates. For two periods, the Bisons hung right in there with the Huskies, but a couple of shorthanded Saskatchewan goals in the third period put the game out of reach for the Bisons.

In Saturday’s game, the Bisons got on the scoreboard first, as Aaron Starr put one in behind the Huskies’ netminder. However, the Bisons played undisciplined hockey, racking up 24 penalties. The Huskies took full advantage on the special teams, scoring three power play goals. Those were more then enough, as the Huskies took the victory 5-1.

Women’s hockey: Bisons lose two one-goal games to Regina

The women’s hockey team was in Regina over the weekend, to battle the Regina Cougars in conference action. Despite battling hard for two straight games, the Bisons left Regina with no wins to show for their effort.

On Friday night, the two teams battled back and forth, trading the lead several times, before the Cougars broke open the game in the third period, scoring three goals in less then a minute. Katherine O’Rourke got the Bisons back in the game with a shorthanded goal, but time ran out on Manitoba, as the Cougars took the win, 6-5.

Saturday night, the Bisons fell victim once again to a three-goal spurt by the Cougars, this time in the first period. Regina’s Elysia Cobbledick netted two of those goals in a span of 1:45. The Bisons attempted to battle back, getting 20 shots on net in the second frame, but the Cougars goalie Jackie Simonot stood her ground. Regina held on for the 4-3 victory.

Women’s volleyball: Bisons continue to impress in preseason

The Bisons took home their fourth-straight pre-season tournament victory, defeating the Alberta Pandas in the finals of the Dino Cup 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-8), in Calgary this past weekend. Despite losing to the Pandas in round-robin play earlier in the weekend, the Bisons made the necessary adjustments to take home the gold medals. The Bisons were led by tournament all-stars Katie Davidson and Erin Nieuwenberg, and tournament MVP, Ashley Voth.
