In the commentary entitled “Orientation Week Revellers Boo Radical Heerleaders (sic)” (Oct.4), Timothy Schwinghamer achieves one notable end: he demonstrates an ignorance comparable to that of the individuals he is criticizing, by counter-attacking with “sober” generalizations. Mr. Schwinghamer dismisses these individuals as borderline-illiterate, and then authours a piece in which he acknowledges the “fact” that he is writing above their level of comprehension. I am curious to know what he intends to achieve with this self-righteous P.C. masturbation, aside from “pushing other people down.” From what I gather, Mr. Schwinghamer did nothing to confront these individuals at the time, therefore I must infer that most of his claims are based on presumptive observations, and also that it should be obvious that his (silent) appeals to the patriarchy to defend the anarchists were left unheard. Mr. Schwinghamer laments the fact that this act was “carried off with immunity,” but by doing nothing save writing a piece addressed to a highly selective audience, he must concede that he is doing nothing to change the lessthan- sane world he suggests we live in.

Mr. Schwinghamer, I am critiquing your methods, and not your ideologies. You have written a piece about inclusivity by polarizing people (including the progressive community you associate yourself with). Please be a little more conscientious the next time you raise your voice to paper.
