Toban Talkback

The mayoral election

PHIL COOK

Brooke Riddols
Nursing

Can you name any of the mayoral candidates other than Sam Katz?
No, that’s the only one I can name.

If you could choose anyone to be the mayor of Winnipeg, who would it be and why?
Someone young. Someone in their 20s who obviously knows my concerns and is more familiar with what young people need.

What would you want the elected mayor to focus on?
School, anything to do with school. Hopefully do something about our tuition fees. I mean that’s the only thing that really concerns me.

What do you think is the most important issue the elected mayor should address?
I think the roads really need to be dealt with, because they are pretty bad, but I know that situation is being remedied right now anyways. Also, I don’t know if they have anything to do with tuition, but as a student, it would be nice to do something about the freeze . . . like keeping it.

If John Mayer ran for mayor, would you vote for him just so Winnipeg would be home of “Mayor Mayer?”
(Laughs) . . . I think that would be hilarious but I don’t think I would vote for him. I mean maybe he would be a good mayor, but then maybe he would completely suck.

On a scale of one to 10, how interested are you in the upcoming mayoral election?
Five . . . I mean I’m going to vote, but I don’t really care.

Can you name any of the candidates other than Sam Katz?
Oh, I know what one guy looks like, does that count? Um, I think the girl’s name starts with an ‘s,’ but other than that I don’t know.

If you could choose any person, fictional or real, to be mayor of Winnipeg, who would it be and why?
I would pick Beck, because he is so “wiked awesome.” And you can quote me on that too . . . wiked with no “c” though, w-i-k-e-d.

On a scale of one to 10, how interested are you in the upcoming mayoral election?
Nine . . . It is important, they run our city.

So you will be voting on Oct. 25?
Yes, and I know who I am going to vote for . . . No, I’m not going to tell you.

What do you think is the most important issue the elected mayor should address?
Urban sprawl. I think they should develop downtown much better. And even though most of the people say that rapid transit is very important, I find that it takes more of the population of Winnipeg away from the core, so it is kind of contradictory. That’s my personal opinion.
