Voting for dummies
A breakdown of what to do and expect on election day
JENELLE PETRINCHUK STAFF
Winnipeg’s 2006 civic election will be taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 25 and it’s important that voters are informed and know what to do when the big day arrives.
First of all, all voters must be Canadian citizens, 18 years old on election day, and Winnipeg residents since April 25, 2006 (or be a registered owner of land in Winnipeg since the same date).
New to this election is the requirement for all voters to provide identification at all places of voting. Every voter will need federal, provincial or municipal documents containing their name, address and photograph, or two other documents proving the voter’s identity and current address.
Identifications that are acceptable include your driver’s licence, Manitoba Health Services Commissions card, Manitoba Blue Cross card, a blank personalized cheque, credit card statement, or utility bill.
People must also bring their Voters Notice (which was mailed out to every eligible resident) along with their ID.
Advanced voting opportunities were available from Oct. 10-13 for people who wished to cast their ballot early.
To find out where to vote on election day, winnipeg.ca provides a link that allows users to type in their address and then receive information on the closest polling station to where they live.
Most importantly, know the candidates. Ballots will be cast for mayor, city councillors and school trustees. There are four mayoral candidates: Marianne Cerilli, Kaj Hasselriis, Ron Pollock and current mayor Sam Katz.
In terms of city councillors, there are 15 different wards that cover the city from Transcona to St. James to Charleswood. In total there are 48 candidates running for these 15 positions, with two to five people running in each ward.
The candidates for school trustees are even more numerous. There are six different school divisions that need to be represented: Louis Riel School Division, Pembina Trails School Division, River East-Transcona School Division, St. James-Assiniboia School Division, Seven Oaks School Division, and Winnipeg School Division.
Each division is then separated into three to five wards leading to a total of 98 candidates running for school trustee, with two to nine people running in each ward.
If a person is unable to attend a voting location on election day and has missed the advanced voting days, they may fill out a sealed envelope ballot to cast their vote. These are due by Friday, Oct. 20, 2006.
Results will be announced by the senior election official on the same day as the election takes place and by Wednesday, Nov. 1 all campaign signs must be removed.
The term of office for elected candidates will then begin on Nov. 7, 2006.
