Soccer team bounces back at home

After two tough defeats last weekend in B.C., the Bisons women’s soccer team came back home this week, and got their season back on track with two victories Sept 23.

On Saturday, the Bisons defeated a game Saskatchewan Huskies 2-1. The game was a tale of two halves. The Bisons were dominant in the first half, scoring right from the get-go, when Desiree Scott found the back of the net in the games first minute. The Bisons continued their offensive attack, but thanks to goalie Codi Corrigan, the Huskies were able to keep their deficit at one goal. The Huskies came out with a vengeance in the second half. They were able to tie the game up in the 53rd minute, on a Jamie Lemay goal over the head of the Bisons’ Ashley Forbes. The Bisons answered back when Caley Miskimmin capitalized on a break in the 68th minute. Manitoba fended off the rest of the Huskies attack, and walked away with a 2-1 victory.

The next afternoon, the Bisons were up against the then-undefeated Alberta Pandas. The game was a total defensive battle, with both teams having very few offensive scoring opportunities. When the Pandas did have a chance to score, they were turned away by the Bisons’ keeper, and player of the game, Ashley Forbes. For the longest time, it looked like Forbes’ outstanding play would be all for naught, but with a mere 10 seconds left in the game, Caley Miskimmin finally broke the deadlock, putting a ball up and past the Alberta keeper, and giving the Bisons the victory 1-0.

The Bisons women’s soccer team is now 3-3, and play in Calgary next weekend.

Hockey team now 2-1 in pre-season

The Bisons men’s hockey team is now 2-1 in the pre-season, after splitting a pair of games over the weekend against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

In their first meeting of the weekend Manitoba took the victory, by a score of 5-2. The Bisons were led by right winger Chris Falloon and goaltender Krister Toews. Falloon was on fire, scoring the Bisons’ first three goals of the game, while Toews did his part, turning away 36 of 38 shots by the Thunderwolves. Jon Cara and Nick Cowan added the other two goals for the Bisons. As with the Bisons’ first pre-season game, this meeting was marred by penalties, on both sides. Both teams were continuing to adapt to new CIS rules

Their second meeting of the weekend was a much tighter affair, with Lakehead squeezing out the victory 6-5, in a shootout. Contrary to their first game, the two teams seemed to have adjusted to the new rules. This led to a much faster-paced, exciting game. The Thunderwolves’ captain Jeff Richards was a force all game. Richards picked up a hat trick, and added an assist. Scoring goals for the Bisons were Aaron Starr, Chris Falloon, Kip Wild, Jon Cara, and Wade Davidson.

Georgette Mink top finisher at Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational The Bisons cross country team was in St. Paul’s, Minn. this weekend to compete in the 21st Roy Griak Invitational, the largest cross-country meet in the United States.

Georgette Mink, of the women’s team, led the Bisons, finishing seventh out of 287 runners, with a time of 23 minutes and 12 seconds. Janelle Vincent finished the 6-kilometer race 1:22 off of her teammates pace, good enough for 61st place. As a team, the Bisons women finished in 16th place, out of 29 teams.

The men’s team was led by Patrice Leclercq and Marlowe Brownlee, who finished in 69th and 78th spot respectively. Their strong performances helped the men’s team to a respectable 25th place out of 52 teams.

The Bisons’ next meet is on Oct. 7, when they travel to Saskatoon for the University of Saskatchewan Open.
