MELISSA HIEBERT STAFF

ILLUSTRATION JAN GEDRICK CASTILLO
This is it. A battle royale. A showdown to end all showdowns. The only thing that matters here is wits, stamina, and . . . who has the better collection of video games. Here, The U of M’s anime club and the gamer club are paired up together in a brutal head to head match that will decide once and for all who is the real champion of room 118 Helen Glass. Let’s get ready to rrruuumble!

In corner 1:

THE ANIME CLUB

What is your group all about?
Nemash: Our group is all about anime and Japanese animation, anime movies, video games, stuff like that. Justin: Anything really related to the Japanese culture, involving anime.
J: We’re a group that watches cartoons and plays video games, I mean, the only reason we really do join is to meet people.
N: You get to hang out with a lot of people with similar interests, especially related to anime, anime movies, video games, and all sorts of stuff.

How many people belong to your group?
N: About 20 to 30 people.
J: I think it’s more around 50 now, with the sign-up sheet.
N: There’s at least about 10 to 15 people [in the office] at all times. What kinds of people should join your group?
N: Anyone who is interested in watching anime, playing video games, or watching movies. There’s a lot of multicultural people in there, just hanging out.

Do you have any fighting words for the gamer club?
N: Just that we have about three people here who own them at Smash Brots. all the time!
J: Yeah, just don’t make us call Rex, Pat, and Iceman; they will make you cry.

In corner 2:

THE GAMER CLUB

What is your group all about?
Drew: Basically we just get together and play games, all sorts of games. There’s the social aspect, just people looking for other people to play games with, competitively or not.

What are the benefits of becoming a member?
D: You get to hang out and play video games, and you get to play all kinds of games that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

How many people are in your group?
D: About 30 active members, with about 50 on the mailing list.

What kinds of people should join your group?
D: People who just want to hang out and are looking for other people to play games with.

Do you have any fighting words for the anime club?
D: No, not really.
Manitoban: They said they could school you in Smash Bros.
D: Aw man, they always resort back to the Smash Bros. Yeah right, they can’t school us at Smash Bros.!

Well, it looks like a draw this time. Go down to 118 Helen Glass and decide for yourself who is the ultimate champion (and who is really better at Smash Bros.).
