Bison BriefsROMER BAUTISTA STAFFSoccer team defeated on road trip The Bison women’s soccer team was in British Columbia over the weekend to play two matches. On Saturday, the Bisons faced off against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Manitoba was able to get out to a quick start, when Desiree Scott chipped a shot over the T-bird keeper five minutes into the game. The T-birds evened the contest 12th minute on a strike from Caitlin Davie. The two teams traded goals once again early in the second half. The contest swung in UBC’s favour in the 74th minute, when Manitoba’s Katherine Reichardt scored an own goal. Amy Bobb added another goal for the T-birds to seal the game. When the final whistle blew, UBC had defeated Manitoba 4-2. On Sunday, the Bisons had their hands full once again, this time with the number-one-ranked University of Victoria Vikes. The first half was a defensive struggle, with both teams failing to get on the scoreboard. After making some halftime adjustments, the Vikes drew first blood in the 49th minute. Moira Hood buried a rebound past Ashley Forbes. That goal ended up being the game winner, as the Vikes were able to fend off the Bison attack for the entire game. A late tally by the Vikes made the final score 2-0. The Bisons are now 1-3 on the season. They continue their season with a home game this Saturday against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Game time is at 10 a.m.. Hockey team starts pre-season with victory In front of over 300 fans at the Murray Arena in Souris, Man., the Bison men’s hockey team kicked off their new year with a 4-1 pre-season victory over the Regina Cougars. Despite giving up the first goal of the game, the Bisons showed their grit and determination, scoring four goals unanswered. The first Bisons first goal of the season came from Kevin Lavallee, with assists coming from David Jacobson and Don Kerfoot. In the second period, the Bisons used a couple of two-man advantages to take control of the game with goals coming from Nolan Walker and Don Kerfoot. Souris’ own Jared Lang, who had an assist on Walker's goal, added to his point total by notching a third-period goal. The effects of Hockey Canada’s new rules were in full force during the game, as each team seemed to have a difficult time staying out of the penalty box. Manitoba was assessed 22 penalties, while Regina had 24. Mackie named athlete of the week in the Canada West After last week’s 77-7 trouncing of the Simon Fraser Clan, it would have been only fitting that a Bison take home the Canada West offensive Athlete of the Week. Quarterback John Mackie was the lucky Bison to take home the award, and his numbers from the game prove that it is well-deserved. Despite only playing in the first half, Mackie threw for 276 yards, on 15-21 passing. Mackie connected with six different receivers, and found the end zone three times. Mackie’s longest pass went to fullback Neil Fulgueras for 60 yards. Mackie’s wonderful first half staked the Bisons a comfortable 41-7 halftime lead. This is the second week in a row that a member of the Bisons took home Canada West football athlete of the week honours. Last week, Brady Browne was named defence football Athlete of the Week, while Simon Blaszczak was named special teams football Athlete of the Week. |
