Bison BriefsROMER BAUTISTA STAFFBison competes at World University Golf Championship Brad Kirton, a member of the Bisons golf team, was a participant in the World University Golf Championship held in Torino, Italy from Sept. 5-9. Kirton was one of 11 Canadians competing in the tournament. He competed in both the men’s individual and men’s team events. As an individual, Kirton finished tied for 31st position, shooting +4 (292). He was 19 shots off the pace set by tournament winner, Japan’s Ikeda Yuta. In the team event, Team Canada finished in fourth place, 12 shots behind the champions, Team Japan. Bison women earn a split in their first two games The Bisons women’s soccer team opened their regular season with a pair of home games this past weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the Bisons fell to the Trinity Western University Spartans in a hard-fought contest, 4-1. Manitoba came out strong, but had a tough time solving goalie Veronika Rogina. They also seemed to have no answer for Trinity Western’s Carlee O’Brien, who found the back of the net three times. Caley Miskimmin scored the Bisons’ lone goal. The next day the Bisons were at it again, this time facing the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) Cascades. Katherine Ateah got the Bisons on the scoreboard early, when her long shot beat the Cascades keeper at the 9:43 mark. The opposition quickly responded and UCFV’s Kristen VanderPauw was able to sneak a penalty kick past Bison goalie Chera Kirkpatrick. The match remained deadlocked for most of the game, until Bison Laura Locke converted a pass from Desiree Scott at the 78 minute mark, putting the Bisons up for good, 2-1. Bisons celebrate first week honours Two members of the Bison football team were honoured for their outstanding play in Manitoba’s exciting come-from-behind victory over the Regina Rams in their season opener on Sept. 2. Brady Browne was named Canada West Defensive Athlete of the Week. Browne totalled four tackles in the game, including an important third down and one stop at the Bisons’ own two-yard line. Browne also blocked a kick in the first half, which led to the Bisons’ first touchdown of the game. Simon Blaszczak was named CIS and Canada West Special Teams Football Athlete of the Week. Blaszczak preserved the Bison victory with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter when he recovered a fumbled punt for a touchdown. On the play, the Rams’ Chris King was unable to handle the kick on his own threeyard line. Blaszczak scooped up the loose ball and was home free for the major. It was Simon’s second TD of the game. He was also the recipient of a 17-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Katherine Reichardt named captain of women’s soccer team With the 2006 soccer season about to kick off, the Bison women’s soccer team named second-year defender Katherine Reichardt captain of their squad. Reichardt proved to be a steady leader on the defensive end for the Bison’s last year. Joining her as assistant captain will be Desiree Scott, a second-year striker, who was last year’s Canada West Rookie of the Year. In Scott’s rookie campaign she netted eight goals. |
