Bison returns from team Canada soccer

A member of the Bison women’s soccer team, Desiree Scott, who was selected to play for the national under- 20 women’s soccer team, is returning home with her team earlier then they had hoped.

The national team was a participant in the FIFA under-20 world championships held in Moscow, Russia this past month. Team Canada started the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Nigeria, but bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Finland. Needing a two-goal victory in its final opening-round match, the team unfortunately fell to China 1-0. With only two teams advancing out of each group, Canada finished third. Meanwhile, the Bisons women’s soccer team, which Scott plays for has begun training camp in preparation for their season opener against Trinity- Western University on September 9.

Football team announces captains

The Bison football squad has announced their six captains for the upcoming 2006 season. Three captains have been named on the offensive side, all of whom are first-time captains for the team. They are John Makie, a third-year quarterback, Terry Watson, a fifth-year offensive lineman, and Neil Fulgueras, a fourthyear fullback. The three captains on the defensive side of the ball were all captains from last year’s team. They are defensive lineman Matt Harper, in his fifth year with the team, fourthyear safety Bob Reist, and Cory Huclack, a fifth-year linebacker.

Athlete of the Year among new recruited for Bisons basketball

The women’s bisons basketball program bolstered its 2006-07 roster recently by adding some local talent. The Bisons were successfully able to recruit the 2005-006 Manitoba High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) Female Athlete of the Year, Tessa Klassen. As a member of the Fort Richmond Centurions, the 5’8” point guard averaged nearly 20 points and 3 steals a game. Tessa was also selected to the provincial all-star team and the all-Manitoban team, while also being named a captain for Team Manitoba at the 2005 Canada Games. Joining Tessa as new recruits are two of her former teammates — her twin sister Kayla Klassen and Jennifer Foster — and a B.C. standout, Jenna Ralston. Kayla and Jennifer were both ranked in the Winnipeg Sun’s Top Ten, while Jenna was a first team all-star in B.C..
